The ninth annual international meeting of the Academic Library
Advancement and Development Network will be held March 23-26, 2003
in Tucson, Arizona. Our host for this meeting is the University
of Arizona. As we anticipate our trek to the Sonoran Desert for
professional refreshment, an oasis seems a perfect metaphor. In
the hope that no copyright issues arise, we have therefore lyrically
titled our program "Midnight at the Oasis: Drawing from the well
of library fund raising success."
The ALADN Conference will offer sessions pertaining to academic
and research library development and fund raising. The program will
focus attendees' attention on the lessons colleagues have learned
in their work to build and strengthen research libraries. This includes
capital projects, such as the innovative Integrated Learning Center
at the University of Arizona Library (http://www.library.arizona.edu/aboutlib/iif/iif.htm),
which will be the focus of our Monday morning session, but equally
involves the steps that lead up to such major projects. How does
a library participate in a campus-wide campaign? What approaches
have proven effective in soliciting major gifts? How do libraries
build endowments? Likewise, capacity? Where do libraries find donors?
How do libraries structure their volunteer boards? How do they utilize
volunteers and friends groups? How do they organize their development
offices? What are examples of successful operational plans? How
do we assess the effectiveness of fund raising activities? The Program
Committee invites program proposals that address and exemplify the
types of frontline and organizational issues suggested by these
questions.
In addition, presentations on four specific topics are requested:
1) planned giving; 2) ethics; 3) fund raising for librarians; 4)
librarian's advice for fund raisers.
The conference committee wishes to engage speakers with a variety
of backgrounds, positions (especially deans and directors) and expertise
to present information and case studies that will contribute to
the professional development of individuals involved in this specialty
within the fields of fund raising and librarianship. Proposals may
be submitted by individuals or groups of individuals. If you wish
to participate as a speaker or panelist, please prepare a one page
summary and outline indicating your topic. Also, please indicate
whether you feel that your presentation is better suited to new
or seasoned fund raisers.
Proposals should be submitted to: Dale Walker, University of Chicago
Library, 1100 East 57th Street, Chicago, Illinois 60637-1596. Alternatively,
and preferably, you may email a Word document (.doc), a PowerPoint
file (.ppt), or an Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf) to dwalker1@uchicago.edu.
PROPOSALS
ARE DUE BY
