BX4700.H5 A3 1982 Special Collections
At a time when few women wrote, Hildegard von Bingen, known as "Sybil of the Rhine", produced major works of theology and visionary writings. Shown here is her German prayer book which dates from the second half of the 12th century. 72 illustrations accompany the individual prayers. The original manuscript is in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library), in Munich. The work is an outstanding example of a medieval illuminated manuscript. In the illuminations, the clothing, architectural styles, and table utensils reflect daily life in the Middle Ages. This facsimile is number 191 of 530 numbered copies.
