Miss Estelle Lutrell: an exhibit about UA Library History
The Reading Room of the 1905 Library.
This photo, c. 1906, shows the library's second-floor reading room, "equipped with countless electric lights with the approved green shades, looking for all the world like the local room of a big, modern newspaper and in the other apartment are to be seen rows and rows of books" (Tucson Citizen). A librarian's desk in the arch separates the books from the readers; the Library was still many years away from having an open-stack policy. The card catalog is to the right of the arch.
