For Love of Ruth: A Celebration of English and American Literature from the Ruth Goodhue Chasteney Memorial Gift

Robert Westervelt Chasteney Jr. established the Ruth Goodhue Chasteney Memorial Gift at The University of Arizona Library to honor his wife, a remarkable individual whose career in publishing opened new vistas for women. Ruth Goodhue was the first woman to serve as managing editor of a Time Inc. publication, The Architectural Forum.

The Gift includes nearly 700 volumes (with the promise of many more) and an Endowment for the perpetual acquisition of English and American literature for Special Collections. For the exhibition and catalogue, the library has selected titles to suggest aspects of the Chasteneys' personal and professional lives.

Gift books and endowment purchases from the Ruth Goodhue Chasteney Memorial Gift Exhibition were on display in the Main Library and Special Collections lobbies during February and March of 1997.

An 88 page, illustrated exhibition catalogue, For Love of Ruth, is available at the Main Library during the exhibition, or by mail at a cost of $10.00 per copy postpaid. A .pdf version (file size approximately 2.8 MB) may be viewed or downloaded from the University of Arizona Library web site. You will need a current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to access this file.

The Friends of the University of Arizona Library celebrated the Ruth Goodhue Chasteney Memorial Gift with a dramatic reading, performed by students and faculty from the Department of Theatre Arts, on March 19, 1997. The catered event featured a private tour of the exhibition and dramatic interpretations of passages from books by authors represented in the Chasteney family library.
