Contemporary Synagogue Architecture

Temple Beth Emet in Anaheim, California, and Temple Solel, in Paradise Valley, Arizona, give the viewer an appreciation of the beauty and art found in many contemporary synagogues. The images below are from color photographs sent by members of these congregations for this exhibit in November 1994.

Temple Beth Emet moved from its Emily Street location in downtown Anaheim to its present location at 1770 W. Cerritos Avenue in 1963. Temple Solel is located at 6805 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley, Arizona 85257.

A view of Temple Beth Emet's Bima, from which religious services are conducted, and a close-up of the Ark containing the synagogue's Torah Scrolls. The Ark is lighted from inside. Notice the Ner Tamid hanging above the Ark.

A wall in Temple Solel's sanctuary is adorned with artwork, reflecting religious themes. Viewers will recognize the shofar, which is sounded at Rosh Hashanah, and the Ten Commandments.

Although more abstract than traditional stained glass renderings, viewers can see the Parting of the Red Sea theme in Temple Solel's beautifully designed stained glass window.

Temple Beth Emet commissioned this postcard of "The Holy Ark." The Ark is surrounded by symbols for the 12 Tribes of Israel.
