LETTER OF NATHAN BIBO TO GOVERNOR W. S. MILLS OF NEW MEXICO, ASKING TO BE APPOINTED NEW MEXICO REPRESENTATIVE AT THE PANAMA INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION TO BE HELD IN SAN FRANCISCO IN 1915, MARCH 6, 1911

Dear Sir: --

While I have not had the honor of a personal introduction to you, I beg to ask you the following consideration.

Being one of the oldest pioneers of New Mexico, well acquainted with its resources developed and to be developed, having hosts of good and prominent friends here as well as in California, I would like to have an appointment as a member of the Commission to represent New Mexico, at the Panama Pacific International Exposition to be held in San Francisco in 1915.

1 beg to refer you to my record annexed herewith, and also to the parties named regarding myself. I would consider it a great honor to serve New Mexico, to the best of my ability, and thank you for the consideration.

1867/9 Arrived in Santa Fé, New Mexico, from Germany, employed by Spiegelberg Brothers.

Took charge of their Post Trader Store, Fort Wingate, New Mexico with the 3rd Cavalry escorting Navajoe Indians from Bosque Redondo to Fort Defiance. Served as sub agent for Navajoes, under Major Clinton, Superintendent of Indians of Santa Fé.

1872/3 Was appointed Post Trader at Camp Apache, A. T. Opened a wagon road from Zuñi, New Mexico, through White Mountains, relieving the U. S. Troops, the 1st Cavalry and 21st Infantry, with the Apache Prisoners, at Camp Apache, A. T. with provisions from here.

Called Chief G. M. Meiggs attention that Government freight could then be brought from Atlantic side, a saving to the Government, of about fifteen (15) cents per pound for freight.

Assisted, General 0. 0. Howard, to return the White Mountains Apaches, to their reservation, doing so, personally myself, taking with me Stephens, my clerk.

1873/84 Established myself at Bernalillo, New Mexico, was appointed Government Agent, and Post Master nine (9) years, and Deputy County Clerk for Bernalillo County.

Established Commercial shipping of Grapes, raised in my own Vineyard, etc., disposing of them in large quantities, to Northern New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, which has since developed into great industry.

During my residence at Bernalillo, New Mexico, I had the honor of entertaining as friends or visitors.

1884 Established business in San Francisco, California, was President of Bibo Newman Co., for over twenty (20) years.

1888 Married and my wedding was honored by the presence of a good many city officials, also by General W. R. Shafter, U. S. A., a good long time friend of mine, also by his aids. - Colonel P. W. Bennett, and General Evan Miles, both of them at time commanding officers of Presidio, Cal., were true personal friends of myself and family, as well as Brigad. General Kobbé, Colonel Edward Hunter Judge Advocate, Lieut. Colonel Guenther, Fort Alcatraz.

1892/00 Was elected president of the Polk Street Improvement Club, which was the first one of its kind, through whose agitation, a change for the better in San Francisco City Government, was affected, giving modern improved lights and better pavement to the City.

Was elected president of one hundred Citizens during labor troubles, and one of three, commissioned to bring about fair understanding between all, paving the way therefor.

1904/6 Was elected president of Associated Retail Grocers of San Francisco, resigning when I left for New Mexico. Was appointed with auditing Committee distributing funds for sufferers of Earthquake and Fire 1906.

1907 Returned to New Mexico, having lost my health (and business

by S. Fr. Fire) choosing outdoor life to recuperate, herding few sheep, and looking for a Ranch location, taking care of my Brother's herds also.

1910/1911 Since, located at Lake Leon McKinley county building a number of dams in several localities, in said county, opening up for bona fide farmers, lands on Eastern part of aforesaid county.
