Description

The files in the Harriet and Fred Rochlin Papers are a product of the historiographic research of Harriet and Fred Rochlin of Los Angeles, California. The files contain wide-ranging types of material relevant to the history of Jewish individuals, comm ercial operations, and communal institutions in Arizona, principally southern Arizona. The material is especially reflective of the late-nineteenth century and the role of Jews in the Arizona Territory. There is also a small number of files reflective o f the history of Jews in southern California, principally San Diego, and one file on Jews in Alaska.

The files in this collection consist primarily of autobiographical reminiscences, copies of historical records, correspondence, interview transcriptions and notes, and scholarly and popular articles and excerpts.

Files are arranged by geographical region (Arizona [Boxes 1-3], Alaska, or California), then alphabetically within the region according to the name of the relevant individual, institution, or the subject matter of the file.

Biographical Note

Harriet and Fred Rochlin are married and live in Los Angeles, California. Harriet is a native of Los Angeles, and, as did her husband, she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. She has worked as a full-time professional writer since 1967, having published a number of works on western Jewish history and other subjects in numerous national magazines, literary and historical journals, and newspapers. She is also a novelist and lecturer. She and her husband published the book Pioneer Jews: A New Life in the FarWest in 1984.

Fred Rochlin is a native of Nogales, Arizona. His parents were Russian immigrants who were among the pioneer settlers of that border town. After service in World War II he earned a degree in architecture and has since gained a reputation as a successful architect in southern California. He has served as past president of the Southern California Jewish Historical Society.
