Data Services: ICPSR

What is ICPSR?

ICPSR stands for " Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, " located at the University of Michigan.  As institutional members of ICPSR, UA faculty and students may use the archive of computerized social science data. To request ICPSR data, contact the SBSRI Data and Software Library.

Need ICPSR data?

ICPSR social science research data is now available directly via the web (for all users connecting with an authorized IP address).

How to download ICPSR data

  • Go to the ICPSR Web site at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu and conduct your data search
  • Once you have identified a dataset of interest, click on the Download button on the Browse/Download page, or click on the download link from the description page
  • If you are an authorized user, you will see a page describing conditions of data use and procedures for getting help in using the data; you will be asked to complete a short, one-time survey that will help us track usage on campus
  • You are now ready to download your dataset and begin your research
  • Data may be in a compressed format which will require the use of unzipping software
  • Note that most ICPSR technical documentation (needed to use the data effectively) is available in electronic, downloadable format
