Taking Sides

By Szabó . In English. Feature Film — After Hitler took over power in 1933, many Jewish artists were forced to leave Germany. Wilhelm Furtw?ngler choose to stay. Though never a member of the party, he was a receipient of honors associated with party membership. However, the conductor often used his position and contacts to save hundreds of Jewish musicians from concentration camps. When U.S. Major Steve Arnold is tasked with the pre-trial investigations, his aim is to prove that the conductor's genius contributed to the Nazi propaganda, while Furtw?ngler insisted he stayed to bring comfort to the German people with his music. — DD232 .T24 — DVD

Feature Film — Western architect Harald Berger (Paul Hubschmid), called to India by Chandra, the Maharajah of Eschnapur, falls in love with the beautiful temple dancer Seetha (Debra Paget), although she is promised to the Maharajah. The Tin Drum

[Blechtrommel, Die], by Schlondorff. In German with subtitles. Feature Film — Chronicles Danzig in the 1920s/1930s and the life and times of Oskar Matzerath the son of a local dealer, a most unusual boy. Equipped with full intellect right from his birth, he decides at his third birthday not to grow up as he sees the crazy world around him at the eve of World War II. So he refuses the society and his tin drum symbolizes his protest against the middle-class mentality of his family and neighborhood, which stand for all passive people in Nazi Germany at that time. — PN1997 .B543 — DVD

Trace of Stones

When the new Party Secretary and a young female engineer arrive, the foreman changes his view of life. The hero's swaggering pose is reminiscent of Hollywood's Western heroes.
