Finding Technical Reports

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 created NASA from its predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The UA Library collections have most of the NASA issued technical reports available either in print or in microfiche. There is duplicate coverage of many of the reports both in format (print, microfiche and online) and/or by distributing agency (GPO & NTIS). The following guide should help you get started:

Format
Dates
Location
Online
dates of coverage and full-text availability varies depending on contributing NASA agency
Print
1958-1970

Select print copies (distributed as part of our GPO Profile; located under SuDoc number on 5th floor of Science Library in compact shelving) .

Microfiche
(Documents issued since 1976 should have records in Sabio which give the accession or SuDoc number.)

1997-present
Located in the NACA/NASA microfiche cabinets in the Science Library Current Periodicals Room; Organized by SuDoc number
1970-1996
Located in the NACA/NASA microfiche cabinets in the Science Library Current Periodicals Room; Organized by NASA Accession number (e.g. N84-023775)
1958-1970
Located in the NACA/NASA microfiche cabinets in the Science Library Current Periodicals Room; Organized by SuDoc number (e.g. NAS63-457889)
GPO Microfiche Collection
Government Printing Office (GPO) Microfiche collection may have duplicate reports arranged by SuDoc number and/or NAS report number
National Technical Information Service (NTIS) Microfiche Collection
The NTIS microfiche collection may also contain duplicate reports; Organized by NTIS Accession number

NASA Special Publications (SP) series items should be searched in Sabio to identify specific holdings information.

Answering the following series of questions will guide you to finding NACA/NASA technical reports on microfiche in the UA Library.

If you have a NACA/NASA accession number (e.g. N45-023775) or a SuDoc number for the technical report:

  1. Use the report accession number to locate the technical report in the microfiche collection.
  2. The NASA and NACA microfiche collections are located in the cabinets labeled NACA/NASA located in the Science-Engineering Library Current Periodicals and Microfiche room on the ground floor of the Science-Engineering Library.

If you do not have a NACA/NASA accession number (1915-present)

  1. In order to locate your document, you will need to find the accession number issued by NACA or NASA. The issuing agency and supporting resources to find the accession number are determined by the date of the document for which you are looking. The following guide should help:
Dates Agency

  • Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR):
    • 1996-present, most recent two years are available online from the NASA Office of Scientific and Technical Information free of charge. Older issues of STAR dating back to 1996 can be obtained as PDF files by contacting the NASA STI Help Desk.
  • Aerospace Database
    • 1986-1993, search by report number and the accession number should be given as part of the full record
