General Databases

National Technical Information Service (NTIS) Guide
Research reports by federal grant recipients. Most reports must be purchased, but those under 20 pages that have been published since 1997 are freely available.

We have many reports on microfiche on the first floor of the Science-Engineering Library.

GPO Monthly Catalog (1976-present)
The most comprehensive listing of federal publications, including books, reports, studies, serials, and maps. It attempts to index all the unclassified publications of federal government agencies. Retrospective volumes go back to 1895 under various titles. This electronic version starts with July 1976.

U.S. Government Agencies

Department of Defense

Public STINT - Scientific and Technical Information Network
The technical report collection for (DTIC) contains all unclassified and unlimited technical report citations since 1965. Includes Defense research, information from hard sciences; environmental pollution and control; and behavioral sciences. This is due to the widespread interests of the DOD.


Department of Energy (including AEC and ERDA)

Search the Department of Energy Public Access Gateway for Energy and Science for access to journal articles and peer-reviewed accepted manuscripts resulting from DOE research funding. The National Library of Energy and the Science Accelerator have been discontinued. Also see:

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

EPA Science Inventory
A searchable database of research products primarily from EPA's Office of Research and Development.

EPA Research
Features research methods, models, tools, and databases in various subject areas.

National Service Center for Environmental Publications (NSCEP)
Search EPA documents. Most are free; there may be a charge for copies of out-of-stock publications.


National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

NASA Technical Report Server (NTRS)
Integrates three of NASA's collections through a common interface. (To browse documents separately from specific collections or research centers, select “Collection” or “NASA Center” in the left column, or use the advanced search to limit searches by them.)

  • NACA Collection: Citations and reports from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics period lasting from 1916-1958.
  • NASA Collection: Citations and documents created or sponsored by NASA, 1958-present.
  • NASA Image Exchange: Citations and images, photos, movies, and videos are downloaded from the NASA Image Exchange and served out through NTRS.

NRC Library
Features document collections, including NUREG-Series Publications (regulatory guides), plus basic references, photos, and video.

AT&T Research Laboratories
Provides access to PDF and post-script (.ps) copies of technical reports from 1996-2000.

Hewlett-Packard Labs: Technical Reports
Offers abstracts and full text of technical reports. Where only the abstract appears, the full text is unavailable due to copyright considerations.

IBM Technical Paper Search
Provides technical reports written by members of the IBM Research community. Some reports are available for download.

Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) Technical Reports
Searchable database of technical reports that includes all the reports in the now-defunct Networked Computer Science Technical Reference Library. This site is maintained by the EECS Department at the University of California, Berkeley.

Networked Computer Science Technical Reference Library (NSCRL)
Collection of computer science technical reports made available for noncommercial use from participating institutions.

Technical Report Archive and Image Library (TRAIL)
A collaborative U.S. academic library project to digitize, archive, and provide persistent and unrestricted access to federal technical reports issued before 1975.

University of Maryland - Virtual Technical Reports Center
Comprehensive site where you can find either full-text reports or searchable extendable abstracts of technical reports. The site also provides links to preprints, eprints, and dissertations.
