Map Resources

 

Maps and Atlases in the Library:

To find maps or atlases use the keyword search page of the UA Library catalog:

  • Search by entering the country name or region and changing the keyword from “Any Field” to “Subject”.
    On the second line, enter the word Maps and change the keyword to “Subject” and limit by dates. 
    If you only wants Maps, you can limit by format: Maps
    e.g. Subject: Turkey and Subject: maps and Year: after 1970 and before 2007
  • Atlases of historical maps can be found by searching Subject: country or region and Subject: historical
    geography and Subject: maps
    e.g. Subject: Palestine and Subject: historical geography and Subject: maps

 

Geospatial Data in the Library:

The Library has geospatial data of Europe and the world that can be used in GIS software such as ArcGIS
(available in the Information Commons areas of the Main Library and Science-Engineering Library). 
All are located on CD-ROM in the Main Library, Information Commons – ask at the Reference Desk

ncludes country and province boundaries, cities/towns, roads, railroads, lakes and rivers.

 

ArcEurope Demographics
I
ncludes country boundaries and demographics for countries and provinces
(sex, births, deaths, households, dwellings, age, and purchasing power).

 

ArcAtlas: Our Earth
I
ncludes transportation, power plants, mining and manufacturing, soils, mineral resources, vegetation,
land use, agriculture, geology, geomorphology, hydrology, reservoirs, glaciers, solar radiation, temperature, and precipitation.

 

Digital Chart of the World
Includes political boundaries, roads, railroads, cities, airports, landmarks, topography, lakes, rivers,
land cover, and vegetation.  Data is from 1993. 

 

Maps and Geospatial Data on the Internet:

Baltic Sea Region GIS, Maps and Statistical Database
Includes interactive map, metadata, and data in Idrisi, ArcInfo, ArcView, and MapInfo formats.

 

Digital Chart of the World
Download Digital Chart of the World data as ArcInfo coverages

 

GIS Data Warehouse
Includes links to geospatial data and online maps.

Global News Bank

International news coverage of current issues and events from Africa, Asia, Europe, the former Soviet Union,

Historical Abstracts
A selective bibliography of the world's historical literature (journal articles, books, dissertations) excluding U.S.
and Canadian history. Covers the historical period from 1450 to present. (1955-present)

Full text of news, business, government and politics, and legal information from over 6,000 sources.

 

Social Sciences Citation Index
Index to core journal articles and cited references in the social sciences. Includes some abstracts.

Includes citations and abstracts to articles in business and the social sciences materials. Emphasis on international
coverage of public policy, government, international relations and current economic, political and social thought.

PopLine
Provides worldwide coverage of population, family planning, and related health issues, including family planning
technology and programs, fertility, and population law and policy. (1970-present)

 

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
Includes abstracts of materials from professional journals, major news magazines and books devoted to North
American and international politics and political analysis. Topics include political institutions, processes and
behavior, international law and politics, public policy, public administration, political theory and political economics.
This database is useful to anyone researching political issues, processes, and public policy worldwide.

 

SourceOECD
Full text of OECD publications, including books, reports, journals and data. Covers economic and social issues from
macroeconomics to trade, education, development and science and innovation. (Some publications date back to 1970s,
most from late 1990's)

 

World Development Indicators
Provides access to 600+ development indicators. Indicators include financial statistics (GNI, savings rates, cash
surpluses), country demographics (birth rate, literacy rate), consumer data (cable television subscriptions and
consumption of computer services). Time series for 208 countries and 18 country groups from 1960 to 2004 are
provided where data are available. (Varies - In some cases, statistics as far back as 1960 are available)

 

Other Sources:

CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online)
Includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded
research projects, and proceedings from conferences. Each section of CIAO is updated with new material on a regular
schedule. Working papers are augmented every month, as are conference proceedings, policy briefs and economic indicators.
Links and resources, the schedule of events and the response files are updated weekly. New journal issues and books are
added as they become available. (1991-present)

 

CIS Congressional Universe (Congressional Research Service Reports)
The Congressional Research Service (CRS) was established within the Library of Congress to provide members, committees,
and congressional staff with nonpartisan and objective research and analysis on all public policy issues. Currently, the CRS
research divisions are: American Law; Domestic Social Policy; Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade; Government and Finance;
Knowledge Services; and Resources, Science and Industry.

 

Economist Intelligence Unit Country Reports
Full text · Global economy and politics · Country reports and profiles

Includes background and historical context of current economic and political events and in-depth analysis of political
and economic trends for over 200 countries. (Mid-1990s-present)

Full text · Global economy and politics · Market indicators and forecasts data available by individual countries or global regions.

 

Europa World Plus

Online version of the Europa World Year Books and the Regional Surveys of the World series. These reference sources
covers political and economic information in more than 250 countries and territories.

 

Lexis-Nexis Statistical Universe
In addition to being a comprehensive source for federal statistics, this database also provides abstracts and indexing to
privately published, international and intergovernmental statistical sources.

Creating Citations


RefWorks
Allows individual users from the UA to create their own personal bibliographic database that then can be used for citing
references in their papers.  Each user will need to set up their own profile by creating a unique username and password

 

Avoiding Plagiarism
Describes what plagiarism is, how to paraphrase, how to avoid plagiarizing, and a link to a tutorial.

 

Citation Style Guides
