HIST 396A-5H - Life Stories And The Practices Of Biography


PRIMARY SOURCE MATERIALS

Primary sources consist of materials created by the participants at the time of the event. They may include personal narratives, diaries, correspondence, and other documents.  They often do exist in translation. 

The Library has many primary source materials, in translation You may want to consult the catalogs of other libraries by searching WorldCat, to find materials in other libraries. These could then be requested on interlibrary loan, if you allow enough lead time to get them.

OTHER LIBRARY CATALOGS AND ARCHIVES

WorldCat, Center for Research Libraries (CRL) for locating archives, manuscripts, andother materials not in the UA library.  All CRL materials can be borrowed for 6 months.

Archives U.S.A
Bibliographic records and indexes for approximately 100,000 archives and manuscript collections in the United States. There is very little on the people you are researching, but bear it in mind if you wish to search people connected with your subject.

Arizona Archives Online
A web searchable database of many of the finding aids to the special collections at ASU, NAU, and the UA. From ASU this includes their Chicano Research Collection, Labriola National American Indian Data Center, Arizona collection among others.

Documenting the American South
Includes first person narratives of the south, North American slave narratives and a library of the American South.

GENERAL BIOGRAPHIES

American National Biography - The American National Biography offers full text portraits of more than 17,500 [deceased] men and women from all eras and walks of life whose lives have shaped the nation. Includes about 7000 biographies not found in the earlier Dictionary of American Biography [which was also published under auspices of the ACLS]. Searchable by name, gender, occupation, birth date, birthplace, death date, contributor's name and/or words/phrases in the full text. Approximately 125 new biographies added each quarter. (Available only to UA Campus.)

Biography Resource Center - The Biography Resource Center + The Complete Marquis Who's Who® is a comprehensive database of biographical information on more than one million people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas. (Available only to UA Campus.)

(Wilson) Biography Reference Bank - Biography Reference Bank contains narrative profiles of over a half million people. Included are the original profiles of Wilson Biographies Plus Illustrated (covering many print volumes of biographical reference books published by H. W. Wilson and others, including all volumes of Current Biography), combined with periodicals coverage of Biography Index and full text articles, page images, and abstracts from the complete range of Wilson databases. (Available only to UA Campus.)

Biography & Genealogy Index - An index to hundreds of sources with biographical information on people worldwide and from all time periods. You will need to consult the SABIO catalog to find the call number for each information source. (Available only to UA Campus.)

Royal Historical Society Bibliography (586 - present)
An online bibliography which provides bibliographic data on historical writing dealing with the British Isles, and with the British empire and commonwealth, during all periods for which written documentation exist.

JSTOR
Fully searchable and full image of complete runs of the major periodicals in history, economics, sociology, Asian, African and Latin American studies. Will not include the most recent few years of a journal, but in a few cases links to Project Muse.

Project Muse
Fully searchable and full image of more current issues of major scholarly journals. In some cases links to older issues in JSTOR.

Humanities Abstracts
 Index of the humanities literature, including archaeology, art, classical studies, folklore, history, journalism, language and literature, linguistics, performing arts, political criticism, philosophy, and religion.Coverage: 1984-present.

SPECIALIZED INDEXES

Art Abstracts (Art Abstracts is the online version of the Art Index)
Broad coverage of over 300 arts journals.  Includes coverage of museum bulletins, yearbooks, exhibition listings, competitions and awards.  Coverage is from 1984 to date.  The print equivalent is 1929 to date. (Main Reference NX 20.A77)

ARTbibliographies Modern
Is available on a LAN (Local Area Network).  Click on it in SABIO's periodicals indexes list!  Begun in 1969, this extensive index includes citations and abstracts of articles appearing in international art, photography, design, and architecture journals.  It indexes various museum catalogs as well.

Bibliography of the History of Art - BHA
Indexing approximately 2500 American and European art journals, this data base also surveys conference proceedings, dissertations, exhibition catalogs and much more.  Coverage is from 1973 to the present.  The BHA was formed by the merger in 1991 of RILA (International Repertory of the Literature of Art) and RAA (Repertoire d'Art et d'Archaeologie). BHA includes and extends the coverage of its two predecessors.

ATLA Religion Database
Index to literature of all traditions, with special strength in Judaism and Christianity. Coverage: 1949 to present. Includes some full text.  This is also a source for information about related people.

Ethnic Newswatch
Full text coverage from ethnic & minority newspapers and magazines. Citations now cover journal articles as well and go back to 1960. Full text is available after 1989.

FRANCIS
World history from any time period with strong multilingual coverage of humanities and social sciences. Journals indexed cover 1984-to date.

International Medieval Bibliography [TIPS]
European and North African Middle Ages. Includes indexed bibliographic information about journal articles, books, conference publications, and chapters in books published since 1984.

ITER [TIPS]
Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700). Index to articles, books, and book chapters published since 1990.
