SUGGESTIONS FOR FINDING
RECENT ACADEMIC JOURNALS ARTICLES IN HISTORY
The best places to search for recent articles from academic journals that you can use for your class paper are listed below. All of these are indexes, which means they will give you a citation to an article in a journal on your topic and sometimes will also link directly to the actual article. To find the journal you will need to either:
Link directly to the journal article from the index or database (listed below)
OR
If there is a link to Article Linker
:
- You may be linked to the actual article or -
- Linked to a page that repeats your citation (journal title, volume, issue, page and date) and then links to the UA catalog
- If there is a catalog record, look for the journal call number
- Find the journal by call number in the library stacks and then find the article
- Or if the UA library does not own the journal you need, there is a link to the InterLibrary Loan Request form.
If there is no link to Article Linker, open another browser window and search the library catalog for the journal title.
NOTE: In some indexes you will also find listings for book reviews, dissertations and book chapters - REMEMBER for this class you are looking for journal articles

Historical Abstracts:
What it Covers: Indexes journals, books, and dissertations covering world history, excluding U.S. and Canada. Historical time period covered is 1450-present.
Search Suggestions:
- Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
- To ensure you only search for Journal Articles, click the “articles” Check Box:
Labor unions and Mexico
Nazi* and Bolivia
(the * after "nazi" will retrieve nazi nazis nazism)
Articles, Books, Collections, Dissertations.
- When you get your list of citations, click on [ Expand record | group ] to read a summary of the article. This will be useful in deciding if the article will be helpful.
- To find the article, either you will be able to link to the “Full text” or click on :
PRISMA - Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Humanísticas
What it Covers: Many full-text scholarly journals for the interdisciplinary study of Hispanic and Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Includes articles in Spanish, Portuguese and English.
Search Suggestions:
- After you connect, click on SEARCH ARTICLES, right side of page
- Type your search terms into the "Keyword" box
- Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
Cuba and African slaves
- Click the check box “Exclude Book Reviews”
- You can limit search to article in English or other languages
- On the right side of the citation will be icons to indicate if the article links to full text and pdf images
HAPI - Hispanic American Periodicals Index
What it Covers: Index to articles in over 100 scholarly journals about issues relating to Latin America. Many articles in Spanish.
Search Suggestions:
- After you connect, click on “Search”
- Type your search into the "Keyword" boxes.
- There are no abstracts,
- You can click on the button to exclude Book Review, which you do NOT want.
- The title of the journal where the article is found is in italics
- Some full text available by clicking on Article Linker.
- Article linker will take you to the UA Library catalog for other access.
HLAS - Handbook of Latin American Studies
What it Covers: Includes citations to books and journal articles from a wide range of sources.
Search Suggestions:
- Type in your search query and click on Search
- Click on the number next to the record you wish to view
- Journal articles will have the Journal Title, volume, page, date listed after the article title in parentheses. ( )
- Many of the entries are for books, so beware.
- No link to UA library’s holdings, you must search the catalog for journal title.
Academic Search Complete
What it Covers: Includes citations and full text to journal articles, popular articles and newspapers
Search Suggestions:
- Put different search concepts on different lines in search box
- After list of search hits comes up, click on link for Academic Journals
- Links to full text or Article Linker
Lexis-Nexis
(Not for academic journals, but represents newspaper views from the source country)
What it Covers: Includes full text of newspapers including Spanish Language newspapers. These are not considered scholarly, but give you a local perspective of events. Most of the coverage begins in about 1996, although some titles go back to 1992.
Search Suggestions:
- On the first screen in the box labeled “Select Sources,” choose "Non-English Language News,"
- Then select "Spanish Language News, Combined" for News Source
- Change the Date to a longer period of time
- Type in your search query
- You can also search for information from other newspapers, by clicking on “Select Sources” and choosing a different category.
Latin American Newsstand
What it Covers: Full text of current articles in 37 major Latin American newspapers and major international newswires covering Latin America such as BBC Monitoring and Notas Financieras. Mostly in Spanish and Portuguese.
Search Suggestions:
- Search for terms in both English and either Spanish or Portuguese.
PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service)
What it Covers: Indexes to articles in journals for political science and public policy, as well as books and U.S. government documents.
Search Suggestions:
- Type your keywords into the different boxes, being careful of whether you are using ‘OR” or “AND.”
- You can limit by language by typing it into a search box on a separate line.
- While most journals in this index are scholarly, a few are more popular than scholarly in content.
- Limit to just journal articles by clicking on the “Limited to” box on the bottom of the screen.
