FINDING PRIMARY SOURCE MATERIALS:


Primary Source Materials can be found in the UA Library Catalog by using the keyword search page and typing in your major search topic into the top line. On the second line, change "Any Field" to "Subject." Type any of the following into the Search Box:

You can search more than one of these by putting OR between subjects.

United States Historical Census Data Browser
Census data for the U.S. by state and county from 1790 to 1970.

Historical Statistics of the United States (Millennial edition) - A definitive reference source for quantitative historical information covering virtually every quantifiable dimension of American history: population, work and welfare, economic structure and performance, governance, and international relations, all from the earliest times to the present.

History of the United States and Canada, all time periods. Covers Latin American history that intersects with U.S. history.

AND (You can search both simultaneously) by clicking on the drop down box where it says “In” and choosing Historical Abstracts to be added.

Historical Abstracts (from EBSCO) [TIPS]
World history, excluding the U.S. and Canada, from time period 1450 to the present. Good coverage of Latin American history.

  • Type in your topic next to “Keyword”.
  • Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
  •             Spain  and  Mexico and Indian*
  • Use an asterisk * to get variants on the word.
  • You can limit by historical time period by filling in dates in the "Time Period” boxes.

To limit just to journal articles, use the checkbox for “articles” below the search boxes in the box, “Document type.”

Ethnic Newswatch
Full-text of newspaper articles from most ethnic communities in the United States. Coverage begins with 1960.

ERIC
The ERIC database is the primary index in the field of education. It indexes articles in 1,300 journals.

JSTOR
Fully searchable and full image of complete runs of major periodicals in history, economics, sociology, African American studies, American Indian Studies, Feminist & Women's Studies and more. Does not include the most recent few years, but in a few cases, links to Project Muse which does cover current issues.

Search Suggestions: Click “Search” when you get into JSTOR

  • Type in your key search terms with “and” between key terms e.g. Indians and mexico
  • Look at the article carefully. There are many book reviews in JSTOR as well as many more substantive journal articles.
  • If you choose the ADVACED SEARCH form, you can exclude book reviews from your search

Black Studies Center

Black Studies Center is a cross-searchable gateway to Black Studies including scholarly essays, recent periodicals, and historical newspaper articles. It combines several resources for research and teaching in Black Studies: Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), The Chicago Defender, and the Black Literature Index.

Black Studies Database: Kaiser Index to Black Resources, 1948-1986
A database based on the Schomburg Center collection with citations from significant journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, pamphlets and reports relevant to the entire history and culture of the Black experience that was published between 1938-1986. E185 .K25 1992 Main Ref. A five-volume set also from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture listing resources for African-Americans.

Black Thought and Culture
A database that includes full-text of non-fiction published works of leading African Americans from 84 sources by 36 authors. Indexes material by author, sources, or influences on authors. Includes interviews, journal articles, letters, fugitive material, biographical essays, and an annotated bibliography of the sources. 1700-present.

Chicago Defender (Proquest 1910-1975 Chicago Defender (Chadwyck Black Studies Center 1910-1975)

The full text backfile of the influential black newspaper. The Chadwyck version combines several resources for research in Black Studies: Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), The Chicago Defender, and the Black Literature Index.

 

MEXICAN AMERICANS:

Hispanic American Periodical Index (HAPI)
Latin America and U.S. Hispanics focus of index to articles, links to some full text. Publications indexed cover 1970 to the present.

 

HLAS (Handbook of Latin American Studies)
Citations and abstracts to books, chapters in books, and journal articles about all aspects of Latin American studies. Many of the indexed publications are published in Latin America.

 

PRISMA - Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Humanísticas
Many full-text scholarly journals for the interdisciplinary study of Hispanic and Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Includes articles in Spanish, Portuguese and English.
