FINDING PRIMARY SOURCE MATERIALS:
Primary Source Materials can be found in the UA Library Catalog by using the keyword search page and typing in your major search topic into the top line. On the second line, change "Any Field" to "Subject." Type any of the following into the Search Box:
Example:
- Mexico
- And
- Spain OR Spanish
- And
- Indian*
Sources, interviews, personal narratives, statistics, diaries, correspondence, biography, archives, or government documents
You can search more than one of these by putting OR between subjects.
Example:
- sources OR personal narratives OR interviews
Maps are also primary sources and can be found using the keyword search page.
Search by entering the country or region name and changing the keyword from “Any Field” to “Subject”.
On the second line, enter the word "Maps" and change the keyword to “Subject.”
Atlases of historical maps can be found by searching the country or region [Subject] and historical geography [Subject] and maps [Subject].
Example:
- Mexico History Spanish colony [subject] and historical geography [subject] and maps [subject]
A search of atlases of historical maps can also be narrowed to a certain time period by adding dates to the “Limit To” search fields, which are located directly under the “Keyword Search” fields.
Example:
- Baja [Subject] and maps [Subject] and 1900 (Year: After) and 1930 (Year: Before).
Additional materials may be found using WorldCat.
The worlds largest union catalog of books, manuscripts and other materials held in libraries worldwide. The InterLibrary Loan request form is part of the database.
Use the same search words that you used successfully in the UA Library Catalog.

Archive of Early American Images
A database of pictures and maps of the colonial Americas, from Hudson Bay to Tierra del Fuego, based on primary sources printed or created between 1492 and ca. 1825.
Arizona Archives Online
A web searchable database of many Finding Aids to the special collections at ASU, NAU, and the UA. From ASU this includes their Chicano Research Collection, Labriola National American Indian Data Center and Arizona Collection among others.
Arizona-Sonora Documents Online
A collection of digital images relating to Sonora, Mexico that are located at three Arizona repositories: the University of Arizona Library Special Collections; the Arizona Historical Society-Tucson; and the Arizona State Library, Archives, and Public Records. The collections date from the 19th and early 20th centuries. They cover a broad range of topics, including ranching, mining, land grants, anti-Chinese movements, crime on the border, and governmental issues.

Documentary Relations of the SouthWest DRSW
Provides the research tools and finding aids to the written record that began with the arrival of the Spanish explorers in the 1530's. The 1,500 microfilm reels of documents, many of them collected by the Jesuit Historical Institute, include the diaries of explorers and reports of missionaries and soldiers. They date from the first written accounts of contact with indigenous peoples in the 16th Century to the Mexican declaration of independence from Spain in 1821. The place names, architecture, food, and many of the Southwestern cultures have their origin in the history of this region. The 'Southwest' in this case covers Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and northern Mexico: all of what was northern New Spain.
Early Encounters in North America: Peoples, Cultures, and the Environment
Letters, dairies, memoirs and accounts of early encounters between Europeans and Native Americans, 1650-1700. Focus on encounters throughout North American and the Caribbean. This includes some materials that are relevant to Mexico.
Maps of Primeria: Early Cartography of the Southwest
Illustrations and descriptions of original rare and historic maps from the University of Arizona Library Map Collection. They portray and chronicle four centuries of mapping from the earliest map of the region in the collection,1556.
Mexico from Empire to Revolution
A Web resource that draws on the collection of the Getty Research Institute which includes photographic reproductions from the period, 1857-1923.
HISTORICAL U.S. GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS FOR THE TIME PERIOD:
U.S. Government Documents through the period of 1854 may be useful primary sources.
Lexis Nexis Congressional Universe
U.S. Congressional materials. Much is online.
Annals of Congress -The Debates and Proceedings in the Congress of the United States from the 1st through 18th Congress, 1789 to 1824.
United States Historical Census Data Browser
Census data for the U.S. by state and county from 1790 to 1970.
Historical Statistics of the United States (Millennial edition) - A definitive reference source for quantitative historical information covering virtually every quantifiable dimension of American history: population, work and welfare, economic structure and performance, governance, and international relations, all from the earliest times to the present.

History of the United States and Canada, all time periods. Covers Latin American history that intersects with U.S. history.
AND (You can search both simultaneously) by clicking on the drop down box where it says “In” and choosing Historical Abstracts to be added.

Historical Abstracts (from EBSCO) [TIPS]
World history, excluding the U.S. and Canada, from time period 1450 to the present. Good coverage of Latin American history.
- Type in your topic next to “Keyword”.
- Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
- Spain and Mexico and Indian*
- Use an asterisk * to get variants on the word.
- You can limit by historical time period by filling in dates in the "Time Period” boxes.
To limit just to journal articles, use the checkbox for “articles” below the search boxes in the box, “Document type.”
AnthropologyPlus
Anthropology, archaeology and cultural studies. Index to the literature from the late nineteenth century to the present.
- Type in your topic next to “Keyword”.
- Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:

- Use an asterisk * to get variants on the word.
AnthroSource
Contains the full text of the current issues of the AAA's most critical peer-reviewed publications, along with access to the full text of the complete AAA journal archive in JSTOR.
- Choose Advanced Search
- Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
Spain and Mexico and Indian*
- AntroSource will often search not only for a specific word, but also a similar word, for example, For example, searches for anthropology will also return results that include anthropologist, anthropological, etc.
Hispanic American Periodical Index (HAPI)
Latin America and U.S. Hispanics focus of index to articles, links to some full text. Publications indexed cover 1970 to the present.
- After you connect, click on “Search”
- Type your search into the "Keyword" boxes.
- There are no abstracts,
- You can click on the button to exclude Book Review.
- The title of the journal where the article is found is in italics
- Some full text available by clicking on Article Linker.
- Article linker will take you to the UA Library catalog for other access.
HLAS (Handbook of Latin American Studies)
Citations and abstracts to books, chapters in books, and journal articles about all aspects of Latin American studies. Many of the indexed publications are published in Latin America.
- Type in your search query and click on Search
- Click on the number next to the record you wish to view
- No link to UA library’s holdings, you must search the catalog for journal title.
PRISMA - Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Humanísticas
Many full-text scholarly journals for the interdisciplinary study of Hispanic and Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Includes articles in Spanish, Portuguese and English.
- After you connect, click on SEARCH ARTICLES, right side of page.
- Type your search terms into the "Keyword" box.
- Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
Mexico AND Indians
- You can limit search to article in English or other languages
- On the right side of the citation will be icons to indicate if the article links to full text and pdf images.
JSTOR
Fully searchable and full image of complete runs of major periodicals in history, economics, sociology, African American studies, American Indian Studies, Feminist & Women's Studies and more. Does not include the most recent few years, but in a few cases, links to Project Muse which does cover current issues.
- Search Suggestions: Click “Search” when you get into JSTOR
- Type in your key search terms with “and” between key terms
e.g. Indians and mexico
- Look at the article carefully. There are many book reviews in JSTOR as well as many more substantive journal articles.
- If you choose the ADVACED SEARCH form, you can exclude book reviews from your search
- You can find a guide to help you search JSTOR more effectively at: http://www.library.arizona.edu/help/tutorials/jstor/index.html.

19th Century Masterfile (Poole's Plus)
Index to American and British publications (1802-1906), the New York Times (1863-1905), New York Daily Tribune (1875-1906), and government publications (1774-1881). This may include some articles of interest for the time period.
Periodical Archives Online..Full Text
Periodicals Archive Online contains over 400 journals, published between 1802 and the 1990s, representing over 1.2 million articles. Periodicals Archive Online continues to add new titles, to give undergraduate and graduate students, university faculty and libraries access to a growing collection of the most historically respected journals in the humanities and social sciences
