History 352: Slavery in Latin America
Suggestions for Finding Recent Academic Journal Articles in History:
The best places to search for recent articles from academic journals that you can use for your class paper are listed below. All of these are indexes, which means they will give you a citation to an article in a journal on your topic. To find the journal you will need to either:
- Link directly to the journal article from the index or database (sometime you will need to use the
see explanation at end of handout)
OR
- Find a reference to a journal from the index. (you will need - journal title, volume, issue, page and date.)
- Search the Library’s Catalog by JOURNAL TITLE
- Find either a link to an electronic version of the journal or find the journal call number
- Find the journal and then find the article
NOTE: In some indexes you will also find listings for book reviews, dissertations and book chapters - REMEMBER for this class you are looking for journal articles and not articles that are book reviews.
All of the following indexes or databases can be searched from the library’s home page (www.library.arizona.edu) by clicking Article & Database Searching under the Search and Find category. The titles of the index/ database are then listed alphabetically.
Historical Abstracts
What it Covers: Indexes journals, books, and dissertations covering world history, excluding U.S. and Canada. Historical time period covered is 1450-present.
Search Suggestions:
- Type in your topic next to “Keyword”.
- Use the boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
- You can limit by historical time period by filling in dates in the Time Period” boxes.
- To limit just to journal articles, use the checkbox for “articles” below the search boxes.
- When you get your list of citations, click on either:
Slave trade and Cuba
Slave rebellion and Mexico

- Expand [ record or | group ] to read the full citation. You will find an abstract describing the contents of the article that will be useful in deciding if the article will be helpful.
- In the “Expanded” display note the first line " Type", it will tell you if the citation is for an article (which you want), or a book review.
- Also note the line, “Citation”; it will give you the journal title where the article can be found.
- There may be a link to the full-text of the whole article, or to
see below for explanation of “Article Linker.”
PRISMA - Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Humanísticas
What it Covers: Index to articles with links to full text to hundreds of journals relating to Latin American studies. Journals indexed are in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Search Suggestions:
- After you connect, click on SEARCH ARTICLES, right side of page.
- Type your search terms into the "Keyword" box.
- Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
Cuba and African slaves
- Click the check box “Exclude Book Reviews”
- You can limit search to article in English or other languages
- On the right side of the citation will be icons to indicate if the article links to full text and pdf images.
HAPI - Hispanic American Periodicals Index
What it Covers: Index to articles in over 100 scholarly journals about issues relating to Hispanic America.
Search Suggestions:
- After you connect, click on “Search”
- Type your search into the "Keyword" boxes.
- There are no abstracts,
- You can click on the button to exclude Book Review, which you do NOT want.
- You can mark the box to limit hits to English only if you wish
- Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
- Some full text available by clicking on Article Linker.
- Article linker will take you to the UA Library catalog for other access.
Slavery and gold
HLAS - Handbook of Latin American Studies
What it Covers: Includes citations to books and journal articles about all aspects of Latin American studies from a wide range of sources.
Search Suggestions:
- Type in your search query and click on Search
- Click on the number next to the record you wish to view
- Journal articles will have the Journal Title, volume, page, date listed after the article title in parentheses. ( )
- Many of the entries are for books, so beware.
- No link to UA library’s holdings, you must search the catalog for journal title.
JSTOR
What it Covers: Full-text coverage of major research journals in many fields including Latin America and History from their first issue until two or three years ago. Does include analytical article and book reviews.
Search Suggestions:
- Click “Search” when you get into JSTOR
- Type in your key search terms with “and” between key terms
e.g. slave rebellion and mexico
Slavery and peru
- Look at the article carefully. There are many book reviews in JSTOR as well as many more substantive journal articles.
- If you choose the ADVACED SEARCH form, you can exclude book reviews from your search
- You can find a guide to help you search JSTOR more effectively at: http://www.library.arizona.edu/help/tutorials/jstor/index.html.
Citation Indexes
What it Covers: Index to articles in thousands of journals in the social sciences and humanities. Can be searched by keyword for words in an article title. Can also be searched by the author of your monograph to find other authors who have cited your monograph in more recent journal articles. That means that another author found the monograph that you are reading, useful in the research for the new article.
Search Suggestions:
For a search on a topic:
- Choose "Easy Search".
- Click the boxes next to "Social Sciences Citation Index" and "Arts and Humanities Citation Index".
- Click on "topic" and type in your topic.
- Use the same type of search as used in Historical Abstracts.
- Beware - you will find book reviews, which you cannot use for this project.
For a search on which authors (of journal articles) are citing your monograph:
- From the first page choose "Full Search".
- Click the boxes next to "Social Sciences Citation Index" and "Arts and Humanities Citation Index".
- Click on "Cited Ref Search".
- Type in the Monograph Author's last name, space, first initial and second initial if he or she uses a second name.
- For Example: Archer L (for Léonie Archer)
Russellwood AJR (for A.J.R. Russell-Wood)
- Type in the Year of publication in the "Cited year" line.
- Click "Look Up".
- Go through the list of items retrieved and click on the titles that match your author's book title.
- You will now find a citation to an article which has "cited" your author.
- Beware - Do not pick a book review, noted by: Document Type: Book Review.
Academic Search Complete
What it Covers: Scholarly and popular journal and newspaper articles. Beware that it includes articles that are book reviews as well as some popular publications. It does include the full text of some articles.
Search Suggestions:
- Search by keywords
- You can limit retrieval to "peer reviewed" or scholarly journals
- You cannot limit by historical time period
(Found next to citations in many indexes/databases)
Article linker will open a box linking to a page that will provide information about how to find that article either by:
- Providing a direct link to the article itself or the journal and then you find the volume and issue you need;
- Providing a link to the library catalog so that you can find the call number for a paper issue if there is no electronic version
- Providing a link to an Interlibrary Loan form so that you can request a copy of the article from another library when the UA library does not own the journal you need.
