What it Covers:
The world’s largest union catalog of books, manuscripts and other materials held in libraries worldwide. It has over 60 million records. The InterLibrary Loan request form is part of the database.
Search Suggestions:
- To be effective use the same terminology as used in the UA Library Catalog.
Change the drop down box that says, “Keyword” to “Subject” - Type the topic you want on the top line.
- Type in the next line: Sources OR Narratives OR Diaries OR [other terms that are used for primary source materials.]
Proquest Historical Newspapers:
- New York Times
- LA Times
- Atlanta Constitution
- Chicago Tribune
- Washington Post
What it Covers:
Full text and full image searching and retrieving of all these newspapers simultaneously.
Use this to find articles written from a U.S. perspective.
Search Suggestions:
- Pay attention to the terms. Try a variety.
- Limit to the appropriate time period. 1936-1939 for materials written during the time.
What it Covers:
Full text of all of the entire Times. Covers 1785-1984. One can view the entire page or specific article. The contents of this newspaper are completely searchable. Use this to find articles written from a British perspective.
Search Suggestions:
- Pay attention to the terms you use.
- Limit to the appropriate time period. 1936-1939 for materials written during the time.
What it Covers:
Primary Historical Documents from Western Europe. Selected transcriptions, facsimiles and translations.
Search Suggestions:
- Click on the link to Spain and then scroll down to the right time period. There is a very limited number of documents pertaining to the Spanish Civil War.
SECONDARY SOURCE MATERIALS
The best places to search for recent articles from academic journals that you can use for your class paper are listed below. All of these are indexes, which means they will give you a citation to an article in a journal on your topic and sometimes will also link directly to the actual article. To find the journal you will need to either:
- Link directly to the journal article from the index or database (listed below)
OR
- If there is a link to Article Linker

- You may be linked to the actual article or -
- Linked to a page that repeats your citation (journal title, volume, issue, page and date) and then links to the UA Catalog
- If there is a catalog record, look for the journal call number
- Find the journal by call number in the library stacks and then find the article.
- Or, you can request a digitized copy of an journal article in the Library. There is a link to Document Delivery.
- Or if the UA library does not own the journal you need, there is a link to the Inter-Library Loan Request form.
- If there is no link to Article Linker, open another browser window and search the library catalog for the journal title.
What it Covers:
Indexes journals, books, and dissertations covering world history, excluding U.S. and Canada. Historical time period covered is 1450-present.
Search Suggestions:
- Use the Boolean AND to link different topics, for example:
Spain AND fascism
Nazi* AND France
(the * after “Nazi” will retrieve: Nazi, Nazis, and Nazism)
- To ensure you only search for Journal Articles, click the “articles” Check box at the bottom of the screen. It is below the search boxes.
- When you get your list of citations, click on Record or Group to read a summary of the article. This will be useful in deciding if the article will be helpful.
What it Covers:
Full-text coverage of major research journals in many fields including Latin America and History from their first issue until two or three years ago. Does include analytical article and book reviews.
Search Suggestions:
- Click “Search” when you get into JSTOR
- Type in your key search terms with “and” between key terms e.g. slave rebellion and mexico
- Look at the article carefully. There are many book reviews in JSTOR as well as many more substantive journal articles.
- If you choose the ADVACED SEARCH form, you can exclude book reviews from your search
- You can find a guide to help you search JSTOR more effectively at: http://www.library.arizona.edu/help/tutorials/jstor/index.html.

Includes citations and full text to journal articles, popular articles and newspapers

PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service):
What it Covers:
Indexes to articles in journals for political science and public policy, as well as books and U.S. government documents.
Search Suggestions:
- Type your keywords into the different boxes, being careful of whether you are using ‘OR” or “AND.”
- You can limit by language by typing it into a search box on a separate line OR by clicking on the box at the bottom of the screen to limit to “English only.”
- While most journals in this index are scholarly, a few are more popular than scholarly in content.
- Limit to just journal articles by clicking on the “Limited to” box on the bottom of the screen.

What it Covers:
Indexes to articles and books in world history as covered in European publications. On the Web from 1984 on. Many of the articles are in English.
Search Suggestions:
- Click on Advanced Search.
- Type your keywords in the box.
- You can limit by language by clicking on the Language by clicking on the drop down arrow next to Language on the bottom of the screen and typing in the language you wish to use.
Political Science Abstracts (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts):

Indexes to articles in journals for international politics and political anslysis.

Periodical Archives Online: (Full Text)
What it Covers:
Periodicals Archive Online contains over 400 journals, published between 1802 and the 1990s, representing over 1.2 million articles.
Search Suggestions:
- Type your keywords into the Search Box.
- If you change the box that indicates a search in “Article Title” to “Article Title and Text,” you will get more results.
- From the results page, look under Results Options on the right hand side.
- Click on Filter by language
