What it Covers:
Records for books, journals and other materials held by the UA Library. It does NOT include articles.
Search Suggestions:
- Type your major search topic in the top box.

What it Covers:
The world’s largest union catalog of books, manuscripts and other materials held in libraries worldwide. It has over 60 million records. The InterLibrary Loan request form is part of the database.
Search Suggestions:
- To be effective use the same terminology as used in the UA Library Catalog.
Change the drop down box that says, “Keyword” to “Subject” - Type the topic you want on the top line.
- Type in the next line: Sources OR Narratives OR Diaries OR [other terms that are used for primary source materials.]
What it Covers:
This contains hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data and the tools to actively use those images. Images are contained that are relevant to the times and place of this period.
Search Suggestions:
- Click on the “Launch” button. It is located on the extreme right hand side of the page.
- On the next page, type your search topic in the Basic Search box. OR, you can Browse by ARTstor classification or ARTstor geography.
- Right click on links to open images.
- Word order does not matter.
- Type in a search phrase in quotation marks if you wish it to appear in that order.
- Use * to find variants within a word, $ to expand from a stem, ? to find similarly spelled words, and _ to represent any character within a word.

SECONDARY SOURCE MATERIALS
The best places to search for recent articles from academic journals that you can use for your class paper are listed below. All of these are indexes, which means they will give you a citation to an article in a journal on your topic and sometimes will also link directly to the actual article. To find the journal you will need to either:
- Link directly to the journal article from the index or database (listed below)
OR
- If there is a link to Article Linker

- You may be linked to the actual article or
- Linked to a page that repeats your citation (journal title, volume, issue, page and date) and then links to the UA catalog
- If there is a catalog record, look for the journal call number
- Find the journal by call number in the library stacks and then find the article.
- Or, you can request a digitized copy of an journal article in the Library. There is a link to Document Delivery.
- Or if the UA library does not own the journal you need, there is a link to the InterLibrary Loan Request form.
- If there is no link to Article Linker, open another browser window and search the library catalog for the journal title.

What it Covers:
Articles and books on European and North African Middle Ages.
Search Suggestions:
- Click on “Enter Databases”
- On the next screen, click on “Go.”
- The editors have their own unique system of classification. An effective way is to combine terms:
- Combine concepts by entering a term in the Full Text box and then browsing in the list of subject terms and choosing on to options in the list of terms. Enter it in the Subject box.
- You can use Boolean operators: AND, OR, & NOT, plus * ? “”
What it Covers:
Articles on sports, games, dance and related topics. Includes some materials on Middle Ages.
Search Suggestions:
- Click on the drop down arrow to the right of the first box and change it to SU Subjects (Descriptors).
- Type in Middle Ages in the search box.
- Type in your search words such as Chess or Tournament* on the next line.
What it Covers:
Articles and books on the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700)
What it Covers:
Fully searchable and full image of complete runs of the major periodicals in history, economics, sociology, Asian, African and Latin American studies. Will not include the most recent few years of a journal, but in a few cases links to Project Muse.
What it Covers:
Fully searchable and full image of more current issues of major scholarly journals. In some cases links to older issues in JSTOR.
- Click on Advanced Search on the top bar.
- You can now enter multiple concepts.
- Type Middle Ages in one search box
- Type chess or tournament in the next search box.
What it Covers:
Index to books and articles about the Islamic world, including Muslim areas of Asia and Africa and Europe, plus Muslim minorities in the rest of the world.
Royal Historical Society Bibliography
What it Covers:
An online bibliography which provides bibliographic data on historical writing dealing with the British Isles, and with the British Empire and Commonwealth, during all periods for which written documentation exist.
- In the Simple Search box that appears, type your terms.
- You can now enter multiple concepts, but you can NOT use Boolean operators: AND, OR, NOT.
- Because the database deals with the British Isles, do not use words such as England or Britain.
Humanities International Index Complete
What it Covers:
A database index of the humanities literature, with abstracts and some full-text of articles in archaeology, art, classical studies, folklore, history, journalism, language and literature, linguistics, performing arts, political criticism, philosophy, and religion.
Search Suggestions:
- Click on the drop down arrow to the right of the first box and change it to SU Subjects (Descriptors).
- Type in Middle Ages in the search box.
- Type in your search words such as Chess or Tournament* on the next line.
What it Covers:
Index to articles in thousands of journals in the social sciences and humanities. Can be searched by keyword for words in an article title. Can also be searched by the author of your monograph to find other authors who have cited your monograph in more recent journal articles. That means that another author found the monograph that you are reading, useful in the research for the new article.
Search Suggestions:
For a search on a topic:
- Choose "Easy Search".
- Click the boxes next to "Social Sciences Citation Index" and "Arts and Humanities Citation Index".
- Click on "topic" and type in your topic.
- Use the same type of search as used in Historical Abstracts.
- Beware - you will find book reviews, which you cannot use for this project.
For a search on which authors (of journal articles) are citing your monograph:
- From the first page choose "Full Search".
- Click the boxes next to "Social Sciences Citation Index" and "Arts and Humanities Citation Index".
- Click on "Cited Ref Search".
- Type in the Monograph Author's last name, space, first initial and second initial if he or she uses a second name.

- Type in the Year of publication in the "Cited year" line.
- Click "Look Up".
- Go through the list of items retrieved and click on the titles that match your author's book title.
- You will now find a citation to an article which has "cited" your author.
- Beware - Do not pick a book review, noted by: Document Type: Book Review.
