See On-line encyclopedias in History, open and then click on BASIC Search
From the retrieved list Click on View Publications
In History Select Europe, 1450 to 1789: Encyclopedia of the Early Modern World, 6v, 2004
Make sure you limit your search to “Within this Publication”
Search for broad topics
Contains many Illustrations/images

EEBO (Early English Books Online):

Go to the History Subject Guide for Early Modern Europe; Select “Primary Sources”, scroll down to Early English Books Online
Early modern typographical conventions mean that in pre-1700 texts in particular certain characters are often used interchangeably: the character u often appears as a v, and vice versa, such that the word love often appears as loue, and usurper sometimes appears as vsurper
EEBO allows you to include typographical variants in your results automatically using the relevant checkbox on the Search page. If you check this box and submit your search, EEBO will find variant forms of your search term in which the following characters have been substituted: v for u; u for v; j for i or y; i for j or y; y for i or j; w for vv or uu; s for f
Check √ box for variant spellings
Use “ “ around phrases and * as a wildcard e.g. “French soldier*”

Finding Images:

Look in your Scholarly Books. The Library record for the book will say “ill.”, “illus.” or “plates” if there are pictures.
Europe, 1450 to 1789: Encyclopedia of the Early Modern World contains many illustrations. See directions under Encyclopedias.
Use ARTstor (a web database repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data)
Works best in IE and must allow pop-ups
Go to the Early Modern Europe subject guide and select “Primary Sources," scroll down to ARTStor
Click on “Search & Browse”
Click “Advanced Search” from top menu bar
Type your keyword into search box
In second search box type: France 17th OR France 16th OR France 18th
Double click on photo to enlarge (must allow pop-ups)
Click on Title of painting for more information about the painting. (Information for your citation)
Subjects that work: rural life, peasant*, church

Finding Scholarly Articles and Databases:

From the History Subject guide for Early Modern Studies, select “Finding Articles” and use:
Historical Abstracts (finds scholarly articles and scholarly books) (to limit by time period for 16th and 17th centuries use: 1500 to 1600. Very narrow date ranges do not work.
JSTOR (finds scholarly articles and book reviews of good scholarly books)
Project Muse (finds scholarly articles and book reviews of good scholarly books)
