Finding Background Information

Understanding your Topic!
Use a SUBJECT encyclopedia. These specialized encyclopedias and dictionaries will help you get background in the a new field of study like language and linguistics. Check these sources for information on your topic.  Use the linguistics sources including Ethnologue (see link below) to be sure your language is non-Indo-European.

International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences
Browse down to the Subject Classification Linguistics, click to open it and then select a subject area like sociolinguistics.  There are articles on all aspects of this topic, and they have bibliographies!

Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics - Online encyclopedia of language and linguistics.  This works just like the International Encyclopedia above.

Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language - P29 .C64 1997 Information Commons Reference.  There is a list of language by family in the back.  Use this to identify non-Indo-European languages.

International Encyclopedia of Linguistics P29 .I58 2003 Information Commons Reference.  Four volume set which covers all aspects of linguistics including information on dialect studies, gender and language etc.

Ethnologue: Languages of the World    This data base can help find alternative names for your language and names of related languages in the same family.
