Industry Information

Strategies for Finding Associations:

The best way to find information on associations is probably through the Encyclopedia of Associations (or another resource listed under "Associations & Conferences" below). Once you are find the association's web page, conference, convention and trade journal information should be easily accessible there. Association web pages can also be good sources for career information and for information on employment opportunities in the field. You can also search for trade journals (through ABI/INFORM) or locate Associations in Business & Company Resource Center (see below).
Also see the Business Subject Pathfinder page on the U of A Library website.

Online Sources:

ABI/INFORM
A good database for finding articles on industry. This database allows you to limit your results to trade journals, scholarly journals, newspapers or magazines, a very nice feature. After you make a search, on the results page, tabs for the different publication types will appear at the top of the results set (be patient, sometimes it takes a second or two). Click on one or another to limit your search to the desired publication type. Note that this is a general business database, so not all trade journals will be in your desired field.

Business Source Complete
Includes oodles of fulltext articles (indexes over 10,000 scholarly business journals, with full text for over 9,500 titles). Also includes industry & market research reports. Like ABI/INFORM, Business Source Complete allows you to limit to scholarly articles, trade journals, etc. It also provides SWOT analyses for many companies. Includes some regional/local coverage (includes Inside Tucson Business).

Business & Company Resource Center
For industry information, click on the "Industry" icon and enter a search term (or SIC NAICS code if you know them) to locate information about your industry. If you don't have much luck, try browsing the SIC or NAICS codes. Entering too little information is usually better than entering too much. That way you can browse the nearby categories. Important: For many (but not all) industry areas, tabs to additional information will appear above your resuts set (these may include: Company profiles, Investment reports, Rankings, Industry overviews, and Associations, among others).

Electronic Journals at the U of A
You can get a listing (and direct access) to all the Film studies journals the U of A gets in Electronic format (and search their content) by clicking on this link and going to the Electronic Journals A-Z page. From there, select "Fine Arts & Music" from the subject list and click "Search." Click on the "Motion Pictures" link, and you will get a list of all the electronic journals in this area. You may also want to try other subject categories (for example, "Advertising and Public Relations" is under the "Business and Economics" subject heading and there may be several relevant journals under the "Technology and Applied Sciences" subject as well).

Career Guide to Industries
Available through the Bureau of Labor Statistics site, this resource gives basic information on dozens of industries. Select "CGI Search/A-Z Index," then click on a letter to browse the index. You may also search by keyword (but browsing seems to be faster and more reliable).

Key Industry Codes:

NAICS Codes
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Replaces the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. NAICS was developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide new comparability in statistics about business activity across North America.

SIC Codes
The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Code is a U.S. Department of Commerce system that organizes all industry types in the U.S. Each business establishment is classified according to its primary activity, signified by a 4-digit SIC code. SIC codes for a particular company may be listed either primary or secondary.
