MAR 460 - Shakespeare on Screen

Research Essay:

Using three (3) filmed versions of a play studied in the course OR three Shakespeare adaptations by a single director, analyze the way in which the cinematic representation of a theme, motif, character, or key scene has changed over time.  The play(s) and two scholarly sources should be used as secondary sources, while the film versions will provide the primary analytical texts.  You should use your découpage skills in presenting evidence from the films.

Library Assignment:

1. Using the Research Rules to Live By page (go to "Tutorials & Guides"), find all the bibliographies or indexes we have in the library on movies/cinema.

2. Do a search for Hitchcock in FIAF, in the MLA and in Academic Search Premier. (Find these under "Article and Database Searching")

3. Search for books about the director John Ford in our Library Catalog and in Worldcat ("Article & Database Searching"). What is the difference?

4. Use the Media Arts Subject Guide (under "Subject Guides") to find whatever primary source documents you can for a paper on A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935).

5. Using the Library Catalog, do your best to bring up a list of 1) all the Horror films in our collection, 2) all the feature films based on Shakespeare’s work, and 3) all the films on DVD that we own.

6. Use the World Shakespeare Bibliography Online, to find bibliographies of work on Shakespeare.

7. Use the Library Catalog to identify the basic call number area for books about Lawrence Olivier.
