Visual Imagery

A director may request visual images of a period, play, object or event. The following are
sources to start with for historical renditions for your play or its artwork, for scene design,
etc.

Indexes about 60 major books and exhibition catalogs identifying paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, happenings, conceptual pieces, earthworks, etc. dating from about 1940 to mid 1970's.

Dictionary of Art.  N31 .D5 1996 Main Ref
This 34-volume encyclopedia of art and artisits Includes mostly black and white illustrations. All are acknowledged at the back of the volume in which they appear.

Althourgh in Italian, it is a beautifully illustrated encyclopedia of theatre, opera, and motion
picture performances.

A lavishly color-illustrated work covering world-wide art.

Fine art reproductions of old & modern masters : a comprehensive illustrated
catalog of art through the ages.

(877 microfiches) 26,000 photographs from the studios of Florence Vandamm and Francis Brugiere published on microfiche. Photographs are from stage productions between 1919 and 1961, together with a "Personality File" of individual performers and a catalog of playwrights, producers, directors and composers

Photography Index : a guide to reproductions. TR199 .P37 CCP
Indexes photographs in some 80 books and catalogs with indexing by photographer,
subject, title and chronology. Actually the entire Center for Creative Photography Library
offers the dramaturg an incredible resource in photographic evidence of the 20th century:
places, scenes, dress, objects, people, etc.

Picture Researcher's Handbook : an international guide to picture sources - and
how to use them

This is really a handbook identifying museums and other organizations that loan or sell
prints, photographs, etc. It is international in scope. This directory does not contain
illustrations, but does identify the number and type of illustrations a listed source provides.
Includes a broad subject index.

The Play Pictorial PN2001 P54 Main Stacks
Represents British drama from 1904-1939. The Library's pictorial holdings of British drama
is also found tin the London Theatre World Annual PN 2596 L6 T54 Main Ref
which provides a pictorial review of West End productions (1949-1965) and the journal
Plays and Players PN 2001 P541 Current Journal/ Main Stacks,which absorbed
Theatre World.

Indexes illustrations of all types of sculpture found in over 900 publications.
