TRAD 103H: Arts and Politics of Latin America

Biographical Information on Latin American Artists

Print Encyclopedias (Reference Collection, Main Library)

The following items are not online, but available in the Reference Collection of the Main Library.  The Reference Collection is to your right as you enter the Main Library.  Often, these will be the only good source for biographical information, particularly for the less famous Latin American artists.

Contemporary Latin American Artists.  N 6502.5 .C66 1993

St. James Guide to Hispanic Artists.  N 6538 .H58 S7 2002

Encyclopedia of Latin American and Caribbean Art.  N 6502 .E53 2000

Latin American Women Artists, Kahlo and Look Who Else:  a selective, annotated bibliography.  N 6502.5 .p83 1996

UA Libraries catalog

Search by subject heading for the artist's name, listing the last name first:  Kahlo, Frida.  Chances are good that there will be biographies on your artist in the collection.  It's important to do a subject search rather than a keyword search; the latter will often retrieve books by an artist rather than books about him/her.

The Encyclopedia of World Biography (available through the Gale Virtual Reference Library), Biography Resource Center (click on "Proceed" to enter), and Wilson Biography Reference Bank are particularly useful when researching people who are not American or British.   And don't forget the specialized art biographical databases, like the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians Online, the Grove Dictionary of Art Online, and Literature Resource Center.
