PART II

Find one scholarly and one popular article on a topic in class.

Step 1: Identify your research topic.

Example 1: "Does the media treat women political candidates differently than male candidates?"

Write your research topic in the box below

Step 2: What are some of the KeyWords from your topic? You will use these later in your research.

Example 2:

women candidate* and television

Note: Use AND to connect KeyWords.
The asterisk * tells the computer to search for all forms of a word.

Step 3: In the window to the right, click on the "Search for Articles" link.

Step 4: In the window to the right, click on Academic Search Premier .

Off-campus users:If you do not use Dakotacom as your Internet Service Provider, you must enter you last name and CatCard number in order to connect.

Step 5: You are now in Academic Search Premier. Type your keyword search as listed in Step 2 above (including AND).

Click the Search button.

Step 6: Look at your list of citations (records, or hits).

Step 7: Choose a citation for a popular article. Look at the article length, content etc.

Step 9: Now identify a scholarly article. Remember, a book review is not considered a scholarly article.

Hint: You can limit your search to scholarly articles, by checking the box next to Peer Reviewed in the second half of the search page.
