Index Islamicus Tip Sheet
For further assistance, contact Jen Tellman.
Indexes the literature on Islam, the Middle East and Muslim World, including areas of Asia , Africa and Muslim minorities elsewhere. Coverage 1906 to present.
The coverage begins with 1906; however, specifying the dates before 1960 is tricky.
To search these early records:
Option 1
Select EARLIEST TO CURRENT in the date range selection box and this will include all Index Islamicus Records from 1906 to the most recent update.
Sometimes this won't be specific enough for your purposes and thus there is option 2, which you ought to use in combination with option 1.
Option 2
Every Index Islamicus record contains a field with the publication year (py). Thus you can add this to your search to specify a specific year of publication
Example:
py=1906 and kw= Egypt (keyword)
Be careful that the date range pull down box is set at “Earliest.”

Now this only leaves one problem, it is rather difficult to specify ranges - the only option available to you is to truncate the last digit of the year with an asterisk, e.g. py=191* and kw= Egypt . This will find 1910, 1911, 1912...1919 in the publication year. If you need to be more specific you are left with using py=(1912 or 1913 or 1914).
Sorting
To avoid continuous clicking forward or back:
After you did your search, you will be shown the number of results, e.g. 450, go to the bottom of the result summary screen and take a look at the right hand side, just above the search form. There should be a box "Record #" type in 450 and click GO... this will get you to the last result. And then you can just navigate forward again..

You can e-mail or save your results. You are given an option of the format and also you can load the results into RefWorks.
