University Libraries Launch Expanded Worldwide Search Tool

Dates: January 14, 2009 - February 24, 2009

The University of Arizona Libraries announce the launch of a new search tool, WorldCat Local, that connects faculty, staff, and students to local, regional, and global results through a single discovery-and-delivery experience. By using the WorldCat Local search box faculty, staff, and students have access to a global database of bibliographic information that can locate resources within the collections of thousands of libraries around the world.

The WorldCat Local search box expands and eases searching by allowing patrons to search:

all library materials including physical and electronic books and journals, digital media, the full text of open-access journal articles, special collections, digital objects; by type of material to refine and limit their search; online article databases; general library information such as contacts, hours, and locations.

The results provided by the WorldCat Local search box will be primarily held by The University of Arizona. Materials held by other libraries around the globe, in English and multiple non-English languages, are also available in the search results. Users can often request these materials through the University Libraries’ Interlibrary Loan services. Please encourage your faculty, staff, and students to try the new WorldCat Local search box at www.library.arizona.edu.

The WorldCat Local search box replaces the currently available Central Search box. If patrons would like to continue using Central Search it will be available by clicking on “Articles and Databases” on the homepage of The University of Arizona Libraries. In addition, patrons will still be able to use the Libraries’ online catalog as an alternative for finding materials.

The new WorldCat Local search box is the first in a series of changes focused on improving patron access to the information resources available through The University of Arizona Libraries. Thank you for your patience as we move toward an improved web interface for The University of Arizona Libraries.
