Description:

Gala performance from Up with People to launch archive project at the University of Arizona Libraries

The Friends of the University Libraries are hosting a gala dinner on Friday, March 16, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom at the UA Student Memorial Center to launch the Up with People Archive Project bringing the global youth education and arts organization’s history to life where its roots began in Tucson.

With more than 1,000 Up with People alumni from the state of Arizona and sixteen hundred host families in Tucson alone, the UA has included this gala event in their Centennial activities and themed the evening “Arizona is Up with People.” Event attendees will come from around the world, and across the United States to celebrate this important collaboration. The cultural event will include entertainment, featuring an international cast of Up with People with special guest performers. Proceeds will support the University of Arizona Libraries Up with People Archive project.

Building on a 25 year history with Up with People, the University of Arizona served as a staging and orientation ground for thousands of international student participants who traveled in the global service and music program before moving its headquarters to Denver in 1993. Today, 22,000 alumni span the globe in more than 100 countries with a community service reach of millions in 38 countries and every state in the US.

Special Collections at the University of Arizona Libraries is the repository for the Up with People Archive and the archives of the Up with People International Alumni Association, as well as the personal archives of Up with People Founder and Chairman Emeritus J. Blanton Belk and his wife, Betty Belk. Over the dynamic 47 year history of Up with People a substantial amount of archival materials have been generated including a vast array of photographs, print publications, records, musical scores and arrangements, videos and costumes.
