From Keyword page, choose Subject as a search type
[Name of language] etymology  e.g.  Subject: German language etymology

From Keyword page, search each of the following on a separate line, as Subject

Key Dictionaries and Encyclopedias on the Web

ARTFL: Trésor de la langue française -- A textual database of texts from the 17th-20th centuries in literature, philosophy, arts and sciences including dictionaries of the period . It includes a searchable Diderot's Encyclopédie (1751-1772) , the Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française, first edition (1694) and more.

Das Wörterbuch-Netz links to a variety of German Dictionaries including Deutsches Wörterbuch von Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm the famous dictionary by the Grimm brothers.

The Encyclopedia of Diderot & d'Alembert: Collaborative Translation Project -- Browse articles that have been translated and search a database of translations in a variety of ways. You will also find links to the original French versions of translated articles

Gallica:La Biliothèque Numérique---A digital collection of texts, audio and images from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. It includes very well recognized editions of works, illuminated manuscripts and dictionaries and newspapers. Under Découverte, you can browse by Theme, Chronologies, Images, Dictionaries,  and Texts.

Middle English Compendium An electronic version of the Middle English Dictionary, a HyperBibliography of Middle English prose and verse, based on the MED bibliographies, and an associated network of electronic resources, including a large collection of Middle English texts.

Oxford English Dictionary Online Contains the complete text of the OED's 20-volume Second Edition. The Oxford English Dictionary is the most comprehensive dictionary of the English language. It traces the development of English from approximately 1150 AD up to the present day. A wide variety of English dialects are included.

Real Academia Española -- Links to many Spanish resources, including a wide array of dictionaries published from 1726-1992. Directions: On upper right side of page, select Diccionario de la lengua española. Select Otros Diccionarios Académicos (lower left), then click the small magnifying glass icon. To search, type the search term intothe search box and click Diccionario (under the search box). Select a dictionary or search all (Todos).
