Finding Articles

Indexing and Abstracting Databases

The databases listed below index articles on global climate change and related topics. Remote use of these databases is restricted to UA students, faculty and staff. When searching from off-campus you will have to log in using your CatCard number. Each database has a slightly different search engine, but all let you search by keyword and subject or descriptor. Online help is available for each. Links to online versions of articles are included when the library subscribes to the online edition of the journal.

GeoScienceWorld (includes GeoRef)
GeoRef is an index to the worldwide literature of geology and geophysics. A good source for information on several aspects of atmospheric science including global climate change/global warming. Useful search terms include: global change, global warming, greenhouse effect, carbon dioxide, and climate effects. Coverage is 1785 to the present for the United States; from 1933 to the present for the rest of the world.

INSPEC

Web of Science (Includes Science Citation Index)
Multidisciplinary database of about 5000 core journals, searchable by keyword, author, and cited author.  Covers approximately 8700 key journals in the science and engineering disciplines from 1900 to the present. Useful search terms include climate change, global warming, carbon dioxide, and social issues. For help using this database go to the Online Tutorial.

Other Databases: To find information about the effects of global climate change on another area such as agriculture or plants and animals or to find information about the effect of activities such as farming or deforestation on climate change it is often useful to search databases on the specific subject such as Agricola or CAB for agriculture, BIOSIS Previews for plants and animals.  Use the list of Subject Guides to select databases for other subjects.

Locating Articles

To find articles without direct links to full text from the database, first search the library catalog by journal name. If you only have an abbreviated journal title, you will need to find the full title using sources linked from Journal Title Abbreviations. The catalog record should include the call number and/or a link to the online version. Another way to double-check is by searching the Locate E-Journals list by journal title. If the library does not own the journal with the article that you need, you can request a copy online through InterLibrary Loan. The library will obtain and deliver a copy of the article(s) that you need to UA students, faculty and staff at no cost to you.
