Software for Creating Citations and Bibliographies:
RefWorks/Write-n-Cite - RefWorks is a web-based citation manager program available to UA faculty, staff and students. It allows one to import citations from many of our databases, or input them manually, and then create bibliographies automatically in the desired style format. (See a list of the available style formats supported by RefWorks.)
Write-n-Cite is a related software program that can be downloaded and installed from the Refworks site. This program works within MS Word as you write your paper to allow you to access your citations stored in RefWorks and to automatically create footnotes and a bibliography.
See our RefWorks Guide for further information. A great FAQ page.
Refworks Export Instructions These instructions will show you the export methods of each database at U of A library. Most databases are self explanatory, a few have additional steps.
Finding Articles:
Finding articles in journals (i.e. periodicals or magazines) can be a complex process and varies greatly depending on the photographic topic being researched. Nevertheless, the following indices are easily accessed and supportive of anyone just beginning to understand academic research:
Art Index
This is the oldest and most reliable index to art magazines (including photography as a genre of art). It began in 1929 and indexes several hundred art journals including some purely photographic journals like History of Photography. It's available in hard copy at the Main Library reference area and in the Architecture Library. The online version of this index, covering the period from 1984 to the present, is called Art Abstracts. Click on the following to connect: Art Abstracts.
ARTbibliographies Modern
Begun in 1969, this title provides abstracts of periodical articles, books, exhibition catalogs and dissertations. There is a paper copy of it in the Main Library reference area. The online version cover the period from 1984 to the present.
Arts & Humanities Citation Index
This is a much more general index begun in 1978. The online version of it began in 1990. Click on the following to connect: Arts & Humanities Citation Index.
JSTOR **
The JSTOR project seeks to develop online access to the full back files of selected journals. The database contains a digitized image of every page and is searchable by every word. The UA Library subscribes to the Arts & Sciences, Arts & Sciences II, Business, Ecology & Botany, General Science Collections and Language & Literature Collection.
19th Century Masterfile. Indexing of magazines and periodical literature published in the U.S. and Britain in the nineteenth century. Covers all subjects of interest and the author index leads to the writings of many famous American and British writers. 1802-1906
