Part 1 : Searching OvidSP

To begin the assignment, go to the OvidSP databases & select AGRICOLA, BIOSIS Previews, and CAB Abstracts (see illustration below):

Once connected to the databases, begin your search. Refer to the class handout for examples.

 

Part 2 : Importing references from OvidSP into RefWorks:

2.1. Select the references you want to import by checking the box next to the number of each reference.

2.2. From the Results Manager, choose Direct Export as the "Result Format" and click on Save under "Actions". Click on Continue on the resulting screen.

Part 3 : Creating the bibliography in RefWorks

3.1 Select the bibliography button and then choose "Access Output Style Manager" from the pull down menu: refworks

3.2 Select "Journal of Plant Physiology" from the resulting list and "Add to Favorites".

3.3. Then, click on the "Back to Previous Page" link. From the resulting screen, choose the file type you prefer (HTML or Word) and then click on the Create Bibliography button.

Part 4 : Cited Reference Searching in the Web of Knowledge

In consultation with your professor, choose an article from your search results to report on. Print out or photocopy the full article. Then, select one reference from the bibliography of the chosen article, and use the Web of Knowledge database to find other articles which have cited this paper.

To begin, Connect to the Web Knowledge and select the "Cited Reference Search" tab.

Then view the information from the reference and input this information into the appropriate fields. See the example below:

Take the information from the citation, and type it into the appropriate fields of the "Cited Reference Search" form

Part 5 : Viewing other Articles which Cite this Paper

From the Search Results, click on View Record. There is a field called "Citing Articles" which will tell you how many times the paper has been cited by other researchers since it was published. (If this paper has not been cited, you will need to try another reference from the bibliography of the paper you printed out.)

By clicking on View Record, you can view a summary of the article as well as be give the option to "view all" citing articles

Then print the resulting screen or screens of references.

Note that at the bottom of the list of results, you can change the settings to display up to 50 references at once by selecting the arrow for the pull down menu:

Part 6 : The Last Step!

From the listed of Citing Articles select one and print out the full text of the article. In this paper's list of references should be the paper you searched for in Step 4.
