Express Retrieval, Recalls, Holds, and Missing Items

Express retrieval

This is when we retrieve items off the library shelves and place them on the hold shelf for you (UA faculty, staff, and students only). See details about express retrieval.

Who may recall
UA faculty, staff and students who have a valid CatCard and a library account in good standing.

What can be recalled
Any book, DVD, or videotape can be recalled, but note that there are exceptions (such as bound journals, music CDs, etc.).

How to recall
Check our library catalog to make sure the item is checked-out. From its online record simply select the "Request this Item" button. You will be prompted to enter your NetID and password if you are not already logged in to your library account.

How to get your recalled item
If you have recalled an item, an email will be sent notifying you when it is available. You can pick it up at the open hold shelves by call number:

Main Library: present your Catcard at the 1st floor information desk

Science-Engineering Library: behind the Information Desk near the entrance to the Reference/Current Periodicals Room

Fine Arts Library: across from the Information Desk

Health Sciences Library: present your Catcard at the information desk

  • Library material may be recalled from any borrower at any time.
  • If you have an item which has been recalled, you will receive an email or letter indicating that the item has been recalled and needs to be returned.
  • Recalled items are due within 10 days of the date the recall is placed.
  • Items will be held for seven days after being returned. If an item has additional holds, it can only be checked-out for seven days.
  • Failure to return recalled materials by the new due date indicated on the recall notice will result in a suspension of borrowing privileges and late fees.
  • Since fees will accrue on recalled items even if you are out of town, it is strongly recommended that you return all library items before leaving.

See express retrieval for information on holding items listed as "in library."

Reporting an item missing

If the item is not on the shelf and the online catalog states that it should be "in library" go to the Information Desk for assistance.

We will:

  • Verify the catalog record (including the item status).
  • Recheck the shelves for you
  • If the item is not found we will,
    • Mark it missing so that it can go through our searches process.
    • Put a hold on the item for you.
