Graduate Student Carrels - Long Term Loan
Regulations
We responded to the need to reduce the number of students on the waiting list and to increase the availability of study space by designating 30% of all long term study carrels as “shared carrels.” As often as possible, we will work to match students from the same department in one carrel. Please be courteous, clean, orderly, and accommodating.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a study carrel you must be one of the following:
- Faculty member (Visiting Faculty, Research Associate, Research Assistant Professor, Clinical Assistant, Retired Emeritus)
- Ph.D. Candidate who has already passed preliminary exams and is currently enrolled at the UA.
All carrel assignments are based on library research needs of PhD students and faculty. Applicants must be currently enrolled or employed with the university. The University Libraries reserve the right to reassign unused carrels.
Loan Rules
Each semester, notification of occupancy will be sent to you via email toward the end of Fall, Spring and Summer sessions. Notification will not be sent to your campus or home address. Each carrel occupant must respond in order ensure their carrel is maintained. If no response is received by the date specified in the email, the library will assume that the carrel is no longer needed and will begin the process of assigning that carrel to another user.
Carrels are non-renewable after the expiration date. Reapplication is necessary to obtain a carrel past the expiration date.
When the carrel assignment terminates, you will be notified by email and you must remove your belongings by the date specified. Items left in the carrel will be removed and the door code will be changed. Personal items removed from study carrels will be taken to Lost and Found, located in the Express Document Center on the first floor of the Main Library.
Once assigned, room changes will not be accommodated except for extenuating circumstances and only if a vacant carrel is available.
Sharing carrels is permitted. However, carrel-mates must also fill out an application. Only those legitimately holding carrel access codes will receive information regarding the carrel. Carrel holders are responsible for notifying anyone else sharing a carrel and responsible for any items removed when door codes are changed.
Responsibilities
The Libraries and University assume no responsibility for materials left in study carrels. The library advises that you do not leave personal items inside the carrels; including laptops, cell phones, and music players. Study carrel users leave personal items inside the carrels at their own risk.
Eating, drinking, and smoking are not permitted in carrels. Also, covering the door window is not permitted. Library Staff must be able to visually check each carrel upon the closing of the library building. Study carrels are only available for use during operating hours of the library.
Failure to abide by these rules will result in carrel privileges being revoked.
Library materials left in carrels must be checked out. If not checked out, the material will be removed from the carrel. Non-circulating materials cannot be kept within the study carrels.
Carrels will be checked periodically for library materials. If unchecked library material is found within a carrel, carrel privileges will be revoked.
Adjacent carrels are in use – please be courteous and maintain minimum noise levels.
Failure to observe the regulations listed above may result in forfeiture of the right to use a carrel.
Confidentiality
Carrel assignments are confidential. Library staff cannot assume paging responsibilities and will not direct others to your carrels. Carrel users and library staff will not share keypad codes.
Technical Support
Most carrels are equipped with an ethernet connection, and wireless internet is available throughout the Library. Please contact the Computer Center Help Line at 621-HELP or our technical Helpline at 621-8483 for information on determining your machine’s hardware needs and instructions.
