Gender in the Music Industry


Research Question: What is the current state of gender equality in the music industry?

This topic will explore the underrepresentation and misogynistic representation of women in the music industry. You will examine the industry at large and more specific genres of music to consider representation of women compared to men, LGBTQ issues, and intersectionality.

Step 1: Locate and read two background articles 

Find the following encyclopedia article by following the path provided:

Music: Underrepresentation of women artists. (2012). In Encyclopedia of Gender in Media (online), p.240-242.

  • Access the UA Library Catalog:  
  • Select Title:
  • Type: encyclopedia of gender in media
  • Click on the title in the list of results (should be first)
  • Click: FIND on the Web
  • Type Underrepresentation of women artists into the search box
  • Read the article

 

Access the following article by following the path provided:

Music business (classic). (n.d.). In Women’s Studies Encyclopedia (online).

  • UA Library Homepage > Search & Find > Subject Guides > Women’s Studies
  • On the first tab, under Get Started, choose Women’s Studies Encyclopedia from the list of Encyclopedias and other Reference Works
  • Once in the encyclopedia, click on search at the top of the screen, and type in “music”
  • Click on Music Business (Classic) and read the article
