Various handwritten financial records of the Tesoreria Nacional de Arispe include receipts, expenses, obligations, agreements and account summaries. Most records relate to the military hospital at Arispe, companías of Tucson, Tubac, Altar, and others under the jurisdiction of the commandant at Arispe. The records give dollar amounts, name of person receiving funds, and the name of the companía.

Arizona Mining Company AZ 91 Articles of agreement, 1869.  Holograph manuscript, on parchment, of "Articles of Agreement" drawn up in London, August 25, 1869, by which Charles D. Poston, as attorney for the Arizona Mining Company, transferred to Roswell Sabine Ripley of London, for the price of 100,000 pounds sterling, all the real and movable property and mineral rights pertaining to the Arivaca Ranch and the Heintzelman (or Cerro Colorado) Mine. Inserted is an affidavit signed by the Mayor of London and the U.S. Consul-General at London acknowledging the validity of the agreement. .10

The collection includes biographical materials, correspondence, manuscripts, short stories, and articles written by Elliott Arnold as well as research files, newspaper clippings and photographs. The majority of the collection consists of Arnold's original manuscripts, short stories and articles. The bulk of the correspondence contains letters received in the 1960s and 1970s from agents, business associates and friends. Photographs include mostly black and white photos of Elliott Arnold during his military career, publicity shots, and autographed photographs of individuals, including Jimmy Stewart. 25.00

Photocopies of typed transcriptions of 76 documents concerned with the political and religious interactions in the Pimería Alta, during the dissolution of the Franciscan mission system. Various civil authorities signed the documents from offices in different locations, but most often in Hermosillo or Arizpe. Documents 13, 39, 44, and 63 discuss Tucson; document 11 is concerned with the Tumacacori Mission. .10

Austin, Jane G. MS 115

Papers of Jane G. Austin, [ca.1870-1894].   

The bulk of the collection contains undated, holographic manuscripts with edits, of three of Austin's novels and eleven of her short stories. Also included are five letters to Austin containing information on historical personages, and appreciation of her writing. Miscellaneous items include poems, drawings, a studio portrait of her taken in 1890, and genealogical background material for her own family, as well as the 17th and 18th century New England families presented in her works. .80

Undated, bound compilation of copied writings on alchemy and antimony; the entries are in a number of different hands. The title page has references to two of Valentinus' published books: Triumph-Wagen Antimonii, or Triumphant Chariot of Antimony, originally published in German in 1604, and Latin in 1646; Zwölff Schlüssel, or Twelve Keys, was printed in German in 1599, and Latin in 1618. .10

Also includes letters written to J.F. Shields during the Civil War, poetry written by Shields during the war, and later letters to his daughter from her husband, John Bayless. Consists chiefly of biographical materials, photographs, published works, and research materials relating to observations and writings on hummingbirds in Arizona. Box two primarily contains envelopes of photographs and negatives of hummingbirds. The envelopes are dated and include descriptions of photographs that are not always consistent with the contents. Bene named several of the hummingbirds he studied (Battlescar, Long-neck, and Sally) and these names appear in some of the descriptions. 1.00

Records of the Commonwealth Mine, 1895-1938 (bulk 1905-1935).   

The bulk of the Commonwealth Mine records document its activities from 1910 until 1930. Many of its earlier and later records were lost or destroyed between the closing of the mine in the 1940s and the salvaging of the records in 1960. Many of the remaining records are fragile and fragmentary; several important series, such as Board of Directors minutes, contain only scarred and scattered remnants of their original contents. 4.20

Photographs comprise the major part of the collection; legal papers and descriptive material are also included. The photos document the company projects from the excavation stages to completed dams. Also depicted are the port city of Guaymas and other Sonoran locations, Yaqui Indians, petroglyphs, the Richardson family and home, mines, and other subjects of local interest; some concern the Mexican Revolution. A report "Background material on irrigation development of the Yaqui Valley, Sonora, Mexico, and the sale of the project to the Mexican government" was written by company attorney Chandler P. Ward in 1968. Original and copied legal papers include tax receipts, information on land sales, stock transfers, and deeds. Printed information includes publicity pamphlets produced by Compañia Constructora Richardson; a stockholder report with map; a booklet "The Land Laws of Mexico;" and several contracts with the Mexican government. .40

Ledger book with handwritten entries that detail the financial transactions of the Divina Providencia Mine, San José, from 1832 to 1836. It also includes financial accounts of the mine owners, Juan Albarez, Estevban Curcier, Juan B. Peeters, and José Thomas de Zuza. Two company inventories are present. One is dated December 1, 1832, when the partners took over the mine; the other is dated April 30, 1836, at the mine's abandonment. .10

The Record of Events column signed by Lt. Col. James W. Barnes states "Engaged guarding Federal prisoners. Changed station from Camp Randell to Camp Groce. Men in good health but poorly armed." .10

Newspaper clippings from 1915 are articles Conrad wrote about his experiences in Poland during World War I. Reprints of photographs depict Conrad, places he lived, his family, and friends, including one of Stephen Crane. Three original etchings of Conrad are by Walter Tittle. Ephemera includes exhibition notices from a 1976 lecture about him, and posters from the 1964 movie production of Lord Jim. .40

Original newspapers from 1871-1872 and modern clippings relate the early history of the area. A broadside by the Black Hills Exploring and Mining Association, Sioux City, Iowa, March 8, 1872, announces the discovery of gold in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Photographs include one of the family home, tintypes of Dr. Cook and his wife Mary Cook, a portrait of him in later years, and a panorama of Sioux City in 1870, with steamboats docked at the river. .80

This collection contains one series, correspondence. It is comprised of 57 letters, 34 of which were written by George Cranston, primarily to his sister, Gertrude. 14 of these letters relate Cranston's experiences as a soldier in the Arizona Territory, from 1866 to 1870. Cranston was stationed at Fort Yuma, Camp Lowell, Fort Grant, Camp Tubac and Camp Crittenden, and his letters reveal the privations of a soldier's life, the uncertainties of living on the frontier, and the fear of Indian attacks. Leaving the army and Arizona in 1870, the letters continue with Cranston's travels in New Mexico, Kansas and Texas. The remaining letters, the bulk of which are addressed to Gertrude, are correspondence from other Cranston siblings, and letters from James Cranston, their father. Many of these are accounts of family activities and events, others reveal some of the emotional undercurrents in family life. .20

Dr. Cullen's practice of physic, October 30, 1771. 

One volume of handwritten lecture notes dated Oct. 30, 1771, addressed to medical students: the introductory sentence reads, "Gentlemen, I come here to deliver a course of Lectures on the Practice of Physic upon that part of our studies for which all the others are intended . . ." The entire text is written in one clear hand. The basic framework is a description of each disease and its symptoms, apparently a recounting of Cullen's earlier published work on the subject, Methodical Nosology, 1769. Following each description is a discussion of the medical treatment for that disease. Interspersed throughout are observations of specific patients, reports and opinions of colleagues, and Cullen's conclusions regarding etiology. .10
