Garces, Francisco AZ 416

Diario de exploraciones en Arizona y California. 1777.  

Eighteenth century manuscript copy of Padre Francisco Garcés' 11-month travel diary. Leaving San Xavier Mission in the autumn of 1775, he traveled with the second Anza Expedition until reaching the Yuma area. From there, he traveled with two Yuma Indian companions through California, re-visiting the San Gabriel Mission. After exploring the Mohave and Colorado Rivers, they crossed northern Arizona to the Hopi mesas and back, returning to San Xavier Sept. 17, 1776. The last sentence gives his name, the date of 1777, and the location of writing as the Tubutama Mission, in Sonora. .10

Single signed, 22-page holographic manuscript contains a detailed description of the southern coastal region of Veracruz, with a view to the full utilization and development of its natural resources; probably commissioned by a government agency. .10

Giffen, Guy James MS 104

Six shooter's who's who, ca. 1950. 

Unpublished typescript of Giffen's bibliography of western badmen and peace officers active from 1865 through the 1890's. Lists 362 outlaws/peace officers with approximately 12,300 references. Each person has a brief history followed by citation references. Some of those mentioned in Arizona are Burt Alvord, Apache Kid, William Brocius, the Clanton gang, the Earp brothers, Tom Ketchum, Pete Kitchen, Perry Owens, John Ringo, John Slaughter, and Henry Wheeler. The references date from the 1920s through the 1940s. Also present area sections of women outlaws, gangs, feuds, and a list by title of each reference used. .40

Relates Aztec history and the life of Montezuma, a 15th century Aztec king. Also includes original drawings and tracings from Aztec codices, a Spanish summary of the books, genealogical diagrams for relatives of Moteczuma Ilhuicamina, and photograph negatives of Aztec drawings. .80
Gillmor, Frances MS 88

The flute of the smoking mirror, [ca. 1940s].   

Original typescript of The Flute of the Smoking Mirror by Frances Gillmor, with holographic corrections and notes. This historical novel relates the social customs of the Aztec people in the area of Lake Texcoco, and the biography of their fifteenth century king, Nezahualcoyotl. His life story from birth to death is related, as are his many contributions as an engineer, codifier of Aztec law, and founder of a commission of arts and letters. .10

Biographical materials, diaries, correspondence, research materials, published and unpublished manuscripts and articles, slides, photographs, and audio tapes. The collection documents Gillmor's literary pursuits, scholarly activities and her wide ranging research in folklore. Correspondents include Ola and Georg Apenes, Albert William Bork, R.S. Boggs, J. Frank Dobie, Henry F. Dobyns, Wayland Hand, Fernando Horcasitas, and others. The collection includes several unpublished manuscripts and early drafts of her published works, research notes and visual materials documenting her work on folk drama and folklore in Mexico and Spain. 23.00

The Ina E. Gittings Papers are comprised of two series: Biographical materials, ca. 1890-1968, and University of Arizona, Department of Physical Education for Women, 1923-1985. Arrangement varies by series. Biographical materials include photographs, biographical summaries, press releases, newspaper clippings, radio speeches, diplomas, a scrapbook, "50 years of Physical Education, 1902-1952," and other information regarding Gittings' personal and professional interests. Also includes materials written by Gittings and others relating to the Department of Physical Education for Women; as well as a history of physical education legislation in Arizona. Information on the Ina E. Gittings building on the University of Arizona campus is also present. .80

Gorgas, Josiah MS 70

Extracts from my notes written chiefly soon after the close of the war, [ca. 1865]. 

A typescript copy of General Gorgas' notes concerning the arms and artillery of the Confederate States Army during the U.S. Civil War. He reports on the distribution of rifles and muskets at the beginning of the war; the resources needed to supply the armies with arms and ammunition; the manufacture of infantry, artillery and cavalry equipment; the organization of the Bureau of Ordnance; the transfer of guns to the South; and his role in coordinating everything from his post in Charlotte, North Carolina. He makes observations about specific types of artillery, such as the Napoleon Field Gun and the Borman Fuze, and describes three explosions at Confederate arsenal laboratories. A list of principal issues from the Richmond Arsenal, July 1, 1861 to Jan. 1, 1865, is also included. .10

Granja del Niño Boys School MS 345

Records of the Granja del Nino boys school, 1939-1959. 

The three scrapbooks in this collection contain a variety of memorabilia regarding the school its activities, and finances. Photographs are pasted into the pages of each book alongside clippings and articles, fútbol (soccer) announcements, award ceremony announcements, correspondence, ledgers, and other items. Album 1 (blue) depicts the activities of the school during the period 1939-1959. Included in this volume are photographs of school activities, official correspondence, theater bills, donation and financial ledgers. Album 2 (brown), similar in content to album 1, covers the period 1944-1959; album 3 (blue), also similar in content to albums 1 and 2, dates 1951-1959. .75

Item 1, 1908: Contains one small wedding book of Arthur B. Hazeltine and Desra C. Gann. The wedding book titled, Married Life, is 57 pages and includes a page with the couple's signed marriage certificate, names of wedding guests, Bible verses, poems, prayers, and two loose newspaper clippings. Item 2, 1910-1911: Contains one small baby book of Alfred Oliver Hazeltine titled The Book of Our Baby, includes birth information, three 1.5 x 2 inch photographs of the child and family members, gift list and names of givers, first year events, and a lock of Alfred's hair at one year old. .25

The 405 extracts, by an unknown compiler, are from the chemical writings of Helmont. The pen-and-ink manuscript is in one hand. It is undated, but the introductory biography section notes Helmont's death date, thus the compilation must be after 1644; perhaps even sometime from the 18th century. .10

Correspondence, minutes, bylaws, leaflets, clippings, and books pertaining to their activities. The correspondence pertains to the proposed Death with Dignity Act; some is with the organization Americans Against Human Suffering. Legal materials involve both the Society and general euthanasia issues. The transcripts are of talks delivered in Tucson and Phoenix. Some records pertain to the 1988 Supreme Court case of Cruzan vs. Harmon. Newsletters from the National Hemlock Society and regional societies are included. 1.25

Hoar, George Frisbie MS 55

Speech of Honorable George F. Hoar delivered in the Senate of the United States, April 17, 1900, on the policy of the United States relative to the Philippine Islands, 1898-1900. 

Original typescript text of speech delivered in the United States Senate, April 17, 1900, with holograph additions and corrections, and printed insertions. The speech was intended to persuade the Senate to vote against Senate Resolution 53, which proclaimed the Philippine Islands as territory belonging to the United States, and provided that a government be imposed by the United States. Senator Hoar cites examples of the decision of the United States in the case of Cuba, and also instances of the treatment of Afro-American civil rights in that time. He gives an extensive account of the recent history in the Philippines, with emphasis on the role of Emilio Aguinaldo as a leader. There are many quotes about and from Aguinaldo. .20

Bound ledger used for several different purposes; the last third of the book is blank. The first 29 pages contain financial entries for the grocery business of J.A. Lyons and Company in 1883. Incoming payments are registered, as are outgoing payments for store rent, office supplies, and the clerk's salary. Prices and quantities for groceries bought and sold are given. The most common items are flour, sugar, wheat, corn, salt, silk, calico, dry apples, bacon, coffee, tea, codfish, and butter. Reference is made to the loss of one of their shipments to Galveston, when the steamboat sank in the Gulf of Mexico. .10
