Who were the Big Bend Basket-Makers?, 1939. 

Typescript about the archaeology of early native peoples in the southwest region of Texas and across the border into Coahuila, Mexico. Martin describes a culture, also referred to as Toboso, that he has named the Big Bend Basket-Makers, because of similarities with the Basket Makers of Arizona and New Mexico. He discusses linguistic groups and migrations, as well as diagnostic traits related to skull shape, textiles, baskets, cloud-blowers, and projectile points. Photographs of a map and projectile points are attached. .10

Ledger, cash book, invoice book, lettercopy book, legal documents, photographs, newspapers, and miscellaneous personal materials. Chiefly business records of a general merchandise store in Hermosillo, 1884-1891, and legal documents from Arizpe, Sonora, 1847-1851. Family papers include correspondence, awards and medals, and financial papers. Newspapers contain material on Sonoran events including an August 1896 attack on Nogales, Sonora by insurgents, known as "Teresistas," or followers of the healer, Teresa Urrea. Photographs include one portrait of Teresa Urrea, and others of captured prisoners following the raid. .80

Included is political material concerning Osborn's 1940 campaign, and McKinney's own campaign in 1942. .40

Papers of Joseph Thomas McKinney, 1841-1927 (bulk 1841-1887). 

Autobiographical sketch, letter, and documents. The 19-page sketch includes his involvement as a law enforcement officer in the Graham- Tewksbury feud; and a letter, 1927, to his son describes a hanging at the Arizona State Prison at Florence. Also present are deeds, tax receipts, certificates of land purchases, bills of sale for slaves during the 1840s, and other documents relating to his grandfather, Joseph Thomas Cook, in Arkansas in Alabama, and to his uncle, J.W. Cook, in Texas. .10

The papers in this collection include two subgroups: Records of the Mescalero Apache Reservation and Related Source Documents. The records, in the form of microfilms, photoprints, and photocopies, include reports, census rolls, correspondence, photographs, muster rolls, and maps and plans from the National Archives and the Smithsonian Institution. The related source documents, in the form of a photocopied thesis as well as photocopies of primary and secondary source materials, are from the Denver Federal Records Center, the Arizona Historical Society, Eve Ball, Robert Mullin, other libraries, books, and magazines. 2.50

Acta, July 21, 1823. 

One printed form completed in manuscript. The army discharge is for Manuel Paredes, first Provincial head of the Columa de Granaderos. It is signed by Jose Moran with his title "El Marq. de Vivanco," and dated January 22, 1825. An engraving of an eagle and cactus depicts the official emblem. .10

Plan de colonización nacionales para los territorios de la Alta y de la Baja California; reglamento para la colonización por familias de los Estados Federados de Mexico, en los territorios de Californias, May 30, 1825.  

Twelve-page manuscript copy of original document in secretarial hand, dated May 30, 1825, with 12 signatures listed. This plan provided for Mexican colonization and social integration of the two Californias. Accompanied by statement of transmittal, signed by Father Baldinucio Lopez. .10

Eight-page manuscript copy of original document in secretarial hand, dated February 10, 1825, and signed by Francisco de Paulo Tamariz. This plan arranged for the establishment of a mercantile negotiation, for products to take care of payment of the garrison that provides for the Peninsula of California, and encourage the same. Accompanied by a six-page statement of transmittal, also signed by Tamariz, on June 21, 1825. .10

Records of the Secretaría de Fomento, Colonización e Industria, 1873-1903, 1920. 

Portfolio of nine documents, mostly handwritten, pertaining to grants of land made to Juan Rochel and José Rico in Altar, Sonora, Mexico. Covers the period 1873-1903; most of the records have addenda dated December 6, 1920. The two 1895 documents are signed with the name of Porfirio Diaz, president of Mexico. They have the ink stamp of the Secretaría de Fomento, whereas the others from 1873 to 1896 are stamped "Ayuntamiento de Altar." The later ones, of 1901 to 1903, are stamped "Altar, Juzgado del Instancia." .10

Miranda, Tomas

MS 184 Carta apologetica al Padre José Utrera de la Compañia de Jesús, Visitador General de las misiones de la Provincia de la Nueva España escrita por el Padre Tomás Miranda, Visitador de Cumuripa en la Provincia de Sonora, a 18 de Febrero de 1755. Mission San Pedro de Cumuripa was located in the Pima Baja region of northern Mexico. Miranda was Jesuit Visitador to the Mission in 1755 and 1756. .10

Mizque, Bolivia MS 84

Petition, 1734, to the Marqués de Castelfuerte, Viceroy of Peru, on behalf of the tributary Yanaconas Indians, Jan. 6, 1754. 

Official handwritten copy, dated the 6th of January, 1754, of a petition by the procurador general of the town council of Mizque to the Viceroy of Peru, on behalf of the Yanaconas Indians. It protests the practice of the corregidor, the chief magistrate of the province, of charging an annual tax of seven pesos per head rather than the three pesos and one real stipulated by the Viceroy. A memorial by the Jesuit Pedro Foronda, member of the Spanish Parliament, expresses views on the subject. The Viceroy's decision in favor of the Indians is given. All written in one clear hand, then signed by General Iñigo Abendano, Chief Magistrate and Chief Justice of Potosí, with a countersignature by Manuel Santos de Therrazas. .10

The Carl Moon collection is comprised of photographs, ca. 1903-1914, consisting of black and white copy prints of Apache, Hopi, Navajo, and other American Indians. The collection is artificially arranged into seven series: Portraits, Cafts, Music, Men, Habitat, Ceremonies and Family. Printed on fiber paper 5 by 8 inches or smaller, these photographs are annotated with names and places, and some are dated. The bulk of the images consist of portraits of individuals, groups, and ceremonies. .40

Typescript account compiled from legal evidence and other authenticated documents concerning the I.W.W. deportation on July 12, 1917, from Bisbee, Ariz. and its aftermath. Includes text of a letter to Robert Jay from Joseph P. Hodgson, Manager at Phelps Dodge, dated Dec. 28, 1929, explaining what occurred during the deportation. Both the account and letter are written from the viewpoint of the management. .10

Neuman, Daniel MS 23 Letters to the teachers of the Alaska School Service, 1911-1912.  Eight copies of holograph letters; part of a series to teachers of Eskimo children in the Alaska School Service, Northwestern District, from Dr. Neuman, and dated 1911 to 1912. The first letter says that the purpose is to instruct them on medical matters supplementary to his book. Symptoms and treatments of diseases like respiratory illness, rickets, measles, scarlet fever, eye diseases, and fevers are discussed. Certain local living conditions are cited as contributing toward the illnesses. Three of the letters contain general diagnostic techniques for use with children. Colored pencil illustrations are included in some of the letters. .10

It is addressed to the Sr. Alcalde of la Cañada; this is probably the mayor of Santa Cruz de la Cañada, 25 miles north of Santa Fe. The letter is a reply to the addressee about the unspecified matter of concern, which has taken a very serious turn. .10

Letters and photographs. Original and typescript copies of personal letters from Anna Ownby to her husband, Bramble B. Ownby, from 1881-1888. They relate daily events in Lordsburg, while he was away working on the railroad. There is also an 1881 letter from Bramble's brother J.R.Ownby to his father, and an 1884 letter from John Salkeld to "Dear Children." A two-page typescript of a 1944 statement made by Bramble Ownby recounts his early years in New Mexico. Among the photographs are one of Anna in 1896, and others of unidentified family members; two of the earlier photos are tintypes. Images of historic buildings in Lordsburg include the railway depot, several different "Ownby Houses," and the saloon in 1884. A printed social invitation to the Ownby's is for a dancing party at Clifton, Arizona in 1884.

Some have acknowledgements to a certain newspaper or person; occasionally the date obtained is added, ranging from 1787-1808. Among the treatments are some for the plague, dropsy, whooping cough, scarlet fever, scurvy, rheumatism, jaundice, and colic. Instructions are given for preparing medicinal items such as tincture of bark, decoction of sarsaparilla, mustard whey, and lead salve. Food recipes include eel, mince pie, tea cakes, and loin of mutton. Variations of wine and mead recipes are given. Household recipes are conveyed for purposes such as cleaning mahogany, making green paint for outdoors, and getting wine stains out of white or yellow regimental leather breeches. .10

Typescript translation of report on existing conditions in the missions of Sonora administered by the Fathers of the Propagation of the Faith College of the Holy Cross in Queretaro, Mexico. Describes each mission and village including number and lifestyle of Native Americans; livestock, farming and crops; and Mission church and other buildings. Includes a biographical sketch by Kieran R. McCarty, 1958. .10

Photocopies of typed transcripts of documents relating to Antonio de los Reyes. The letters date from 1768 to 1769, when he first went to the Santos Reyes Mission at Cucurbe; several were sent from neighboring Tuape Mission. Of the 11 letters, all but one are addressed to the Governor Juan Claudio de Pineda; the other is to unnamed officials at the Querétaro College. One letter from Father Francisco Roche to the governor is also present. Later documents include a 1774 report, his 1776 plan regarding spiritual matters and organizational reforms at the Sonoran missions, and two commentaries by others on his unpopular plan. .10

Photocopies of typed transcriptions. Some are royal orders, 1784- 1786, directed to Bishop Antonio de los Reyes, concerning the custodial settlement of the missions and missionaries. The individual documents are noted as being copies and signed by the officials Miguel Ant. Cuevas at Alamos and Christoval Carvalan at Arizpe. Also includes some letters from Reyes to Viceroy Martías de Galvez about the urgent need to establish the Custodia of San Carlos. The final section has reports for Visitor General José de Gálvez. .10

Contains letters from customers and colleagues, writers, and artists; major correspondents are J. Frank Dobie, Helen S. Giffen, Carl Hertzog, Lawrence Clark Powell, Ralph W. Yarborough, and David Magee. Also present is material by and about Reynolds, Dobie, Hertzog, Powell, Yarborough, and Magee; as well as about Ross Santee. An original Santee watercolor is included in his file. Proof copies are present of Magee's book Infinite Riches, and Powell's book A Southwestern Century, published by Reynolds in 1958. With the Powell materials are two engraving plates used for its cover illustration, by Tom Lea. The special "occasional" catalogs produced by Reynolds include original essays by select authors, and are accompanied by letters commenting on the issues. Some are concerned with Jewish history and stories. Others are poetry books, including ones by Allen Ginsberg, Alfred Kreymborg, and Reznikoff's wife, Marie Syrkin. Articles, reviews, and one book are about Reznikoff and his work; the book is titled Charles Reznikoff: a Critical Essay, by Milton Hindus. The main correspondent is Albert Lewin, a Hollywood agent and personal friend. The letters, from 1916 to 1945, discuss their own work, as well as their opinions of other contemporary books and plays. 3.75
